Does anyone know the flat rate labor time to replace a clutch in an 01 Sunfire for botht the 2.2 and 2.4 litre engines? I have someone wanting me to replace a clutch for him but don't know what it should cost out in town. I don't want to be doing it for free, yet I don't want to price him into one of those shops out in town.

i know a clutch is rather easy to do. i am not sure of flat rate, i just go with 30$ per hour. that is cheaper than most places in this area... by myself, it took nearly 3 hours from start to finish. I just needed help bleeding the clutch.

$30/hr is dirt cheap! Most shops are sitting around $75-85/hr... At least here in Colorado.
Same here in NY, $80-$90. I've seen $120/hour.
I appreciate the info guys, but I'm actually looking for how long the flat rate labor time guide gives a tech to do the job. Right now price is kind of irrelevant. I called some shops and where most shops were from $1000 to $1500, I had a couple quote me $600. I want to get a feel for what it costs so that the guy I am doing it for doesn't think I am ripping him off, and at the same time I am trying to figure out how these shops can justify $600 when the parts cost nearly $450. Cottman Transmission originally quoted me $650 and when I questioned it, they said it is easy and not an exotic drive train. When I told them the quote on parts I had, they suddenly told me they would have to call me back. When they did, the price went to $1000 because "it's a labor intensive job". So I would like to know how long the labor time guide gives a technician to complete the job before the tech starts losing his or her ass.

1.2 hours for half shafts
3.8 hours for transmission removal/installation
5.2 Hours for clutch assy
So above hours total 10.2 hours, which at $65.00 an hour totals to $663.00 before tax and shop fees and the parts that would need replaced. Thats the majority of it. Of course they can charge you more for removing tires, brakes, linkages, wiring, etc.

Ha, 10.2 hours for clutch removal.... the times you listed are all overlapping, so it would be only 5.2 to replace the clutch.
5.2 sound right, if not more than enough.

OK, I could be wrong simply because I had other work done, but when I had my transmission out of my 99 Z24 under warranty, the dealership charged my warranty company around 13 hours. Now, I'm not sure if that included the breakdown of the transmission to replace the spider gears, and then again 2 months later the same to replace the input shaft, idler shaft, most of the synchros and most of the blocker rings. But that is what they raped the warranty company for. I don't get what they charged the warranty company for because they were the ones who messed up the transmission when they put the spioder gears in, but that is the past and water under the bridge. Hell, I don't even have that car anymore.

Does not mean the technician see anymore there than some place else. The dealer I left 3 years ago was charging $95/hr and I was only getting $19.50 of it. From what I understand they now charge $105 and the techs have not received a pay raise.
Our rate is $140/hour, I'm not gonna get real specific but I get paid over $30 per hour.
i should work at a dealer. In this area, people barely want to pay my prices, i couldnt imagine over $100!! They say you only get what you pay for thou... Im starting to wonder if my work should reflect the price....

The last dealershipI worked at back in 2004, I was getting paid 30% of labor. To bring the highs and lows into perspective, the best I made was $30.00 per hour. That was on customer paid jobs. Warranty paid slightly less. Basic maintenance though sucked. I mas somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.19 per oil change. That amounted to roughly $8.00 per hour if all I did was oil changes. But that was 6 years ago. I'm sure that dealership is still paying 30% of a max labor rate of much more than they charged when I was there.
