Bad city MPG

Hey, I wanted to know if 18-19mpg all city driving with AC on is bad for a 2004 sunfire. I can get 30-31mpg on the all highway. Just trying to figure out whether it needs a tune up. I just bought it used with 75k kms on it.

well thats not too bad with the ac on. Remember it accounts ur acceleration type (hard or soft) how much you stop and go and whatnot. If you drive where i do (middle of chicago, and always stop and go) Im getting really bad gas mileage. Plus your ac makes u loose a little more gas mileage. I would say do a tune up with new plugs and plug boots, and fuel filter. Couldnt hurt. And that will help a little bit. Good luck!

Thanks, Spark plugs and fuel filter is what I was thinking of doing this weekend anyways. Is the fuel filter on these hard to do? Do I need a quick disconnect tool or do they have the green clip style?

^ one side is a green clip (quick disconnect) and the other side is a threaded nut (use 2 combination wrenches)

also the Ecotec does not have plug wires, the plugs are under the cover that says ECOTEC.

Do I need a quick disconnect tool or just flat head screwdriver?

flat head should work, you might not even need that just use your hands, hold down the tabs and it should come off! It's kind of like removing an air line from an impact gun just so you get the idea.

I replaced mine recently...Used a flathead screwdriver for the quick disconnect. Make sure you start the car and then pull the fuel pump relay to remove any residual pressure in the lines or you'll get more than necessary all over you.

Ur right, no wires, but there called boots. Its whats connects the Ignition Coil Housing to the plugs themselves. Those should be changed if plugs are being replaced also. There made very similar to the 2.4/2.4 motors and can dry rot and cause a misfire. Especially when pulling them, its just better to do it while ur there then to not too.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try to do the tune up this week. Having a hard time getting ac delco plugs in this city, pretty sad.Every Place had Bosch and Champions only! I have had bad about Bosch but not sure on the Champions. But if I have any problems with the plugs or filter I will ask here, and I will keep you updated with my mileage afterward.

Something doesn't sound right.... driving my 2.2 around town like the race car that it is, even on a bad tank I'll still get 23 MPG. It's a 4 door 3 speed.

I found out that all the gas in the area has 10% ethanol all year round. Does that make a big difference or not?
