for cryin out loud!!! just when you think you got it solved...
previously i was experiencing problems with my engine/temp guage. In a nut shell, at 3200 rpm my temp gauge would act crazy and just drop. I would also experience some "pulsing or surging" from the engine when traveling 65-75 mph range (rpms would happen to be in the previously mentioned range at this speed). so i replaced the plugs and wires and seemed to take care of the pulsing/surging, then my engine light finally came on and said the ECT sensor was faulty, so i replaced it and the temp gauge was back to acting normal..... WELL NOW ITS ACTING UP AGAIN! (temp gauge that is...havent gone 65+mph lately.) i took a video on my phone (verizon) but dont know how to upload it....?? anywho, basically what happens and i cant say ive noticed any consistency yet but lately if my rpms get around 3500-4000 the temp gauges drops. the other day while sitting in the drive through, the temp gauge dropped (obviously the rpms were not high) and i think i heard a fan kick on???? tonight while taking the video and listening, when the rpms get up in the 3500+ range and the temp gauge drops, the engine sounds different.....not sure how i'd explain it though.... my rusted off exhaust makes it difficult to hear the engine itself.
anywho, any more suggestions? no codes in the past couple years of dealing with expect for the Faulty ECT...

the other day the temp gauge would act up at random speeds/rpms.
do you think it could be the cluster? i could see it obviously cause gauges to not work properly, but would that go as far as to making the engine act up because of the "incorrect readings" ???
Alright, from the cluster there is a tan wire that goes into your PCM. From the PCM there is a wire that goes to your temperature sender. The ground for the cluster is at the tranny/engine bolt. Since it's JUST the temperature that's acting up, we can dedeuce that it's either A - bad cluster. B - bad temperature sender or C - bad wiring from sender to PCM.

ok..... just want to throw up a bit of an update i guess.... nothing has been switched changed on my part but it has been acting very consistent again. once the rpms pass 3k the temp gauge drops and if i let off the throttle to drop the rpms, the temp goes back to normal.....

would would/could cause the temp gauge to drop each time the rmps reach a particular point? but when the Rpms are below the point, the temp gauge is fine.... no cells.... seems to do it more so once the car is warmed up. dont remember seeing the temp gauge act funny when i just start the car and start driving....
oh and i know it is probably a completely separate issue, but when i have the car in first gear (playing with the rpms and the temp gauge issue) i hear a whistling noise, but only when its in 1st????
I would check the temp sending unit,they are cheap to replace and a faulty temp sender can cause an engine to run poorly or fail to run at all, had this problem on my 96 saturn and the sender was bad(wouldnt allow it to start). And as far as being at a specific rpm, maybe engine harmonics is vibrating the senor at that rpm??????? Resonant Frequency???? Just my 2 cents
I've had almost the same exact issue you've described twice. Both were 98 2200's. Mine would do it randomly at any cruising speed, and got so bad that it eventually done it all the time. The temp gauge would drop to nothing, and then the rpm's would start going crazy causing the car to jerk pretty hard. I was also throwing the ECT faulty/low voltage code and also one that referred to the torque converter switch. I replaced the ECT sensor twice, torque converter solenoid, as well as a load of other things till I finally figured it out. In my case, both times it ended up being the ECT connector. One of the wires broke off down in the connector and sometimes would make contact, sometimes not. I just cut it off and soldered in another one and all issues fixed!

To upload your video, text it to your email, open on the computer. If its a .3gp file you'll most likely have to run a converter to convert it to a common movie file (there are free ones and easy to use), then you can upload to photobucket. That's if it's like mine, lol. Doesn't take long at all.
As far as your issue, I'd try the suggestions listed above and go from there.

sounds pretty darn similar!! Can you buy a new connector? The wiring seemed find... Didn't notice it to be loose

ok, so my check engine light is on (havent had a chance to get it read) but now my temp gauge is always all the way down and i havent experienced the original issue....
any ideas? half tempted to just drive around the way it is! hahaha
I would... get a gauge pod for your pillar or wherever.. and get a set of gauges and put them in.. I think most can be spliced into existing wires but not 100% on that. I'd put in the coolant temp, oil temp or pressure, and volts or exhaust temp... As long as having the crazy gauges in your dash doesn't affect the engine or anything else. Plus an aftermarket gauge will probably read more accurately than the stocker in cluster.

mine didn't appear to be loose either. but i noticed whenever i tried to push the wires into the connector more, then my problem would go away for a few days before returning. Not sure if you can buy them new at a parts store, but I just cut a connector off a 2.4 (since i haven't had luck out of the 98-99 2200 ones), leaving several inches of wire to be able to solder. Haven't had issues out of either motor now for a couple years. good luck...

If you want a new connector... most auto stores will have them if you check.
got the code... ECT low whatever... no @!#$ its low the temp gauge doesnt even read a temp! hahah no idea whats going on..... maybe i'll just drop it off at a shop and see if they can find anything....??
Change the plug going to the ECT and your problem should be fixed .. I have done it twice on my green car.. I had the same problem as you..
code was the same P0118: ECT sensor... got it replaced under warranty for free... installed... nothing.
