I have a 2004 cavalier...... When I shift into second gear, as soon as I accelerate, I pops out of gear! What could possibly cause this?

DONT REPLACE THE TRANNY!! not yet. IVE had four trannys in my 02 manual and the more i work on it myself, the more i feel that the dealers may have ripped me off. Disassemble you center console to expose your shifter assembly. (like 5 bolts) there should be small plastic/nylon cylinders that the cables run through. there may be a little plastic cap that is broken, ment to hold the entire force of the cable being shifted. or, the little rectangular boxes at the base of your shifter, may need unsnapped, "opened" and the plastic threaded piece may need to be moved forward or backward. Good luck

Hi, need advice. 1996 cavy 2.2 4spd. has reverse and 1st and 2nd, no 3rd 4th engine revs free as if in neutral. today I replaced the trans filter and changed the fluid, ran the car till it got to regular temp no detected leaks. has a rough idle and reads "ets off" and check engine. I've been told by some one else that I needed to replace the TPS, "transmission modulator", fluid and filter, map sensor, and several others before giving up on the transmission. I'm at the end of my rope and only have room for a couple more guesses, I like the forum's so far from what I've seen but I haven't found anything like this yet.

A little more info, the car sat up for almost a year before i bought it, ran around for 4 months, had a cracked head, i had that replaced then the trans gave out 600miles from home a week later (work related), after that it sat up for a year up until now due to financial limitations. I'm doing the oil and oil filter tomorrow, and I'm going to attempt a test drive to see if the filter might possibly have helped but the fluid smelled fine and was red in tint still and the transmission pan was not overly sludgy or filled with debris or metal. I have no idea what might be wrong with it, i've only ever worked on an old late 80's 350.

dreading electronics,

Michael. Sounds like ur cars transmissions 3rd-4th gear clutch pack took a dump. It happens. Sounds like the tranny just needs to be rebuilt or u can replace it with a used unit. There pretty cheap if you look hard enough, and swapping it isnt that hard. When it revs its because its obviously not catching the gear. You could try that trans stop slip, and it maybe will help. But I wont bet on it. When a car has higher mileage most of the time the sludge is whats keeping the trans working. And when that gets moved or removed thats when the stuff hits the fan. If you get it to operating temp on the engine, you prolly not at temp on the tranny, since only driving it really gets it warm. But I think your tranny is shot man. Goodluck buddy.

There are some around, I've been trying to avoid direct interference with the tranny, by just buy sensors that are obviously past their prime. unfortunately for poor callie some one made lemonade out of her already before I got her lol, but I'm not gonna give up on her. the best junkyard option I've gotten is $225 for a used with 30 day and self install. does that sound about right? I'm also open to switching engine and transmission up to the 2.4 dohc one I hear so much about. If I did try that, would I have to snag the computer, fuse box, and harness alone, perhaps pointing me to a faq I missed.

ok, i got some basic info questions if any one cares to answer. first of all i test drove it today no change in condition, so know what i have to do now. I'm going to replace the 4spd for the 2.2, probably with a salvage thrans. Whats a good monetary range to look at for -salvage-rebuilding-buying rebuilt- and is "factory" still 1200-1700?

If I did this, and then turned around and had somebody rebuild my trans with "beefy" parts and went through all the saving to get a "street" flywheel and torque conv. and what not- will the 2.4 bolt in later if I manage to find one or does it have a diff BH. Next question is does the 2.2 comp and wiring handle the 2.4. and the final question is does any one have any complaints about Eibach's spring and shock kits?

noticed mine on the front were "damaged" by a bend at the mid point. I don't like how the car feels all wishy washy in corners and stopping. Any one with any info or links would be appreciated. I'm also interested in other shocks/springs. This place looks pretty great lol, prolly stick around abit.

Ok. Im not 100% certain, so look at the sticky at the top of the page. But, the 2.4 will bolt in, with the 2.4 motor mounts. You will need the transmission, engine, complete engine harness, and computer. Everything else is pretty much the same. Other then that, im not 100% sure. A little bit (small amount) of rewiring maybe needed, again, im not sure. Other then that, pretty much everything else is the exact same.

The springs, I cant help you since im only use to Air. Goodluck tho, and If you need anything else, just ask.

lol I guess it'd be better to buy a coupe with a crapped out 2.4 and rework it, go manual too. air bags sound cool but I honestly have no idea how they work or how to install them. I checked out those koni shocks every one talks about they looked really cool, the adjustable ones. I don't know how I can like a brown money funnel so much but for some reason I do. I see you love yours too lol.

as far as anything else, the ABS, brake system, and such should be pretty easy to take out huh?
