fuel pump wont kick on help
Friday, July 02, 2010 2:20 AM
Yesterday on the way to work the car started to stumble and fall on its face like I was running out of gas except I have a half of a tank I just put in. I get to work shut it off and now it won't start. Just cranks and cranks. I also can't hear it turn on when I put the key in the start polsition. Besides the relay and the pump itself is there anything else I should check before I drop the tank?

Check for 12 volts at the grey wire at the harness back at the tank. Have you done filter?

I will check the wire...if it has 12volts its not the pump? I kinda ruled the filter out since I don't even hear the pump kick on.

get under the car and beat on the tank with your fist or a chunk of 2x4 or something. beat on it quite a few times, if it fires off after you do this it's probly the pump.

Check and see if it has 12 volts, if it doesn't it might be the connector.

car's still not starting? even if it didn't fire off after you hit the gas tank it doesn't necessarily rule the pump out. that's just kind of a sure fire way of finding out if it's in the process of dying.

I ordered the wiring harness from rock auto for $13 to the door. I'm going to give that a shot then replace the pump if that doesn't work.

Put the new harness and try. If it is a no go I would try to start it by spraying some throtle body cleaner through the throtle body or pouring just a litle gas, if it starts then it is a gas related problem(gas pump probably) if not it could be something electric and there is no spark.

Im leaning towards fuel pump issues because when I turn the key the fuel pump doesnt kick on and prime.

If the OPSU dosen't see oil pressure or if the opsu went bad the car will not start its a gm thing. Also is there fuel pump fuse? but if the pump isn't primeing i would think the pump is shot

I call dibs on the fuel pump being shot. Delphi pumps are notorious for crapping out, and it affects a lot of GM vehicles.

They die fast when you keep the fuel level low...

That is correct. Our pumps are fluid-cooled, so when the tank is consistently left below 1/4 tank the fuel pump overheats and fails. I would replace (solder and shrinkwrap!!!) the connector first - as for whatever reason a lot of GM vehicles have a problem with the plug corroding - and if still nothing replace the pump. Keep it simple.

Haha this thread is from last july. It did wind up being the fuel pump. I changed the connector first and it didnt make a difference. I also found out that a cheap pump is not the way to go because it died on me again in late february/early march. This last time I replaced it with an AC delco unit. If this pump dies I figure I have some bad wiring fix and will go with a racetronix pump lol.

Dont think that's true...my 95 ohv, i unscrewed the sending unit from the block and put a aftermarket oil pressure sensor in the hole and just left the stock sensor hanging but still connected to the harness, runs fine.

Your 95 OBD1 is not like OBD2 vehicles.

This is true, although unscrewing my Oil Pressure sensor did nothing, unplugging it from the harness only let me run on whatever was "primed", so im guessing, because it will only let me drive for short time before dying out, then i prime it and its same story....also my coolant temp sensor being unplugged, starts fine, once i touch the gas, it stalls...wierd things
