Manual Transmission bearing noise
Saturday, May 08, 2010 7:38 AM
My Transmission is now howling louder than my radio can play. Anyone know much about getting one overhauled? I'd be removing and installing it myself. I replaced both outer hub assemblies when I replaced the 1/2 shafts. I was hoping it was an inner CV joint but no such luck. So, I need the bearings replaced and was reading on all data pro about all the specialty tools required to do the job and I think I will surrender a few hard earned dollars to have it done.
The car is a 94 Pontiac Sunbird. Its a 5 speed manual. with 163K on it.

What would you like to know about overhauling it?

Some of the special tools are almost always needed, some you can get away without having.

Is it a mitsubishi expensive not worth it? My wife stopped in a transmission shop and they told her they only do automatics, and didn't know who would do manuals. I haven't called myself because I like to do the research before I start asking that way I know if I'm being lied to.
Also is it something I could tackle? I've only taken 1 regular manual trans apart that was in a chevy luv truck. I remember that being easy. I had to replace a broken shifter fork in it. I mean I have tools and tech exp just not familiar with the internals of a manual. If I had a problem with a transmission I just went and bought another transmission. But this car is a metric specialty. I'm thinking its going to require some stupid expensive specialty tool or a press both of which I don't have handy.

I found it easy to replace the whole thing, plus in only cost $125.... 2 hours of my time too. It a fairly easy job, just watch out on those clutch cables and the fluid line. If its internals, i just change the whole unit.

Just a quick ? are you sure it is the bearings and not the release bearing (throw out).I realize even if you push the clutch in yeah the noise should stop being either are the problem. Both can show noise in gear or not.Either way I am sure you prolly know this but, just wanted you to consider it even with the cars age it easily could be the bearings internally,Good luck with this project.

You are trying to say it took 2 hrs to replace a manual trans?

Thanks Ron But I replaced the Throw out bearing when I replaced the clutch last year. And it howls in neutral, only when rolling. If I could find a rebuilt trans for exchange that would be cool. Trouble is I don't want another wore out used (not rebuilt) trans. Also once the trans is out I will be replacing the clutch just because its already out and and easy to get to.

Yes, 2 hours, in and out. I had a hand and everything else i needed. Also a very important timeline for motivation!
