I have a 97 sunfire 5 speed.. the clutch is really easy to push in.. when you first go to start it up, you gotta pump the clutch a few times, and then it will switch into all the gears fine.. but if you dont it will just grind and not go into a gear.. im thinking the clutch fluid needs to be bleed?? anyopne have any input?
thanks in advance

im not familiar with the clutch system. is it hydraulic? if it is then yeah, if you have to pump it up, it sound like your fluid is low, or there is air in the system. I would definitely check for a leak.

it is easy to bleed out too. that would be my first start. Dont drive it around like this or you might ruin the clutch.

Could also be your slave cylinder on its way out. You better hope its not, because its a PITA to change. Good luck!

is the slave cylinder mounted on a metal plate like a F16 transmission?
if so, the mounting plate could be cracked and flexing when you engage the clutch and cause it not to engage fully, have a friend pump the clutch while you watch the movement of the cylinder and it should be easy to spot.

Wow my 94 Sunbird clutch and slave cylinders are on the outside of the transmission. They are plastic and both failed after I installed a new clutch. They had over 100k on them so they were due anyway. I replaced them one at a time and after the slave cyl replacement I could finally get the car to go into gear.
Good luck

Sounds to me like the slave is going.
