Tin can popping sound after I turn car off

Just like the title says. It's a 99 GT with the 2.4, approx 93,000 miles. It just started doing it about a month ago. Shut car off then after a couple minutes there's a series of popping noises like a tin can expanding or contracting. The only thing I can figure is it's the gas tank, exhaust or brakes (drums) but it has a real hollow sound to it. It does it like after a minute or two then repeats every few minutes until the car cools off. Most may say brakes but IMO the brakes wouldn't make that type of hollow pop.

Thoughts?

Its your catalytic converter cooling down along with the rest of the exhaust.

Ok, It's rather odd that it just started doing it. Is it a sign that I need a new converter or mufflers?

it's your cat, it's always done it, you just never noticed it before.

The cat in a 2.4L runs about 350 degrees hotter than a 2.2L, so yea you'll notice some noise as it cools.
