Replacing Fuel Pump - 03 Cav
Wednesday, April 08, 2009 7:29 PM
So it seems like the fuel pump on my wife's '03 Cav with 100k on it decided to die today. I checked by holding open the purge valve on the fuel line while having her try to start it and NO fuel was coming out with any pressure. Is there anything else i can do to test the fuel pump?

If its the pump, i'm thinking I can replace it in my driveway but I want to know if i will need any special tools to do this?
Do i need that special tool to disconnect the fuel lines at the tank or can I use my hands to disconnect them?
Besides buying a new pump, do i need to buy new gaskets?
I've read that the heat shield can be a pain, any tips on removing it? is it really held on by rivets?

Any help would be great!

Your pump is dead. Its almost expected with cavs ~ 100k.

I had a shop do mine, so i can't help you with the special tools.

I've dropped that tank more times than I can count. No special tools required.

Its two straps that hold it up, one side of the strap has a bolt the other does not. Socket, ratchet, extension, pliers, done. IIRC.

You could listen to hear if its priming but if you got into the purge and no pressure then its more than likely dead. While you are under there, replace the fuel filter as well.

i replaced my pump and it wasnt too bad...you dont NEED teh tool to disconnect teh lines but it will make it easier. Teh shield is held in by rivits but you can drill em out and just Bend it out teh way. Use a self tapping screws to put teh shield back on. Like stated above its being held by two straps once teh tank is down its cake...hardest part is dropping it and putting it back on...took me about 2-3 hours by myself and it was teh frist time i ever did it. While your there might as well change teh fuel filter...
