i have a 99 2.2 cavalier... im having a problem with the car over heating. it will go into the red and the check gauges light will come on... so far i have giving the car a tune up, i have changed the thermostat and housing.. and also changed the water pump.. when i talked to my mechanic he told me the car had poor circulation (pipes that should be too hot to touch were cool enough to grab).. ive been keeping an eye on my antifreeze as well and every so often i need to add some in... also the heat inside the car will go in and out. by this i mean that it will be hot one min then cold the next and sometimes will become hot again.. any help would be greatly appreciated..
I bet your fan never (or rarely) comes on, right? Your cooling system needs to have the air bled out of it. There is a bleeder screw on the drivers side heater pipe, just below the coil packs. Get the car warm and loosen this screw (be easy with it) until nothing but a stream of antifreeze comes out. Keep an eye on the overflow reservoir, if it runs dry you'll have to start all over. Screw is a 7mm, if I recall correctly. Be careful, as the coolant that comes out will be VERY hot!!!
Had this issue last spring after a radiator change, until I just happened to notice the warning sticker on that pipe. Haven't had an issue since.
i believe the fan is coming on when its supposed to and i have bled the system already..
