just a little background -the car is a 97 sunfire with a 2.2 and a 3 speed. has a sunroof , manual windows, and manual locks which somebody half ass installed an aftermarket alarm(which has no remotes) at one time with power actuators so it locks and unlocks auto with the shift into a gear or park.
The girlfriends sunfires developed a recent issue, the key will actually come out of the ignition while driving if you hit the right bump! Ive actually figured out that the key comes out of the ignition in all positions and sometimes you have to turn the ignition to start position a few times before the damn thing recognizes that youre trying to start it up!
Well Im pretty sure the ignition needs replacement, Im wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything like this?
Also, are ignitions interchangeable between 95-99 jbodys or are they specific?
Another problem that came with the ignition thing is that the driver side door lock no longer works from the outside with the key, or with the other lock when put in drive, seems like the lock is froze up - possibly the actuator?
Thanks for any help
Sounds to me you need a new ignition lock cyl, Thats common to happen due to alot of keys on the key chain over the years, And wear and tear. Also for the door locks arent working with the key, Might need new door lock cyl's common to seize over years, actuator possibly is wornout, U can take that actuator off just use regular manual door lock wit the key, Or get a test light or multi-meter see if their is any current going through the actuator.
Good Luck.
keep us updated.
are all 95-99 j body ignitions interchangeable? im looking into getting one right now but dont want to grab the wrong one!
I've had trouble with my ignition cylinder also and I did look into it at one point. I cant remember if they are interchangeable - I wan't to say yes but I'm not sure. But I do know that it does matter which transmission you have. An ignition cylinder from a manual can't go on an automatic and vice versa.
I've managed to "get the touch" when it comes to my igntion cylinder so I can put the key in and turn it everytime but nobody else seems to be able to - better security for me
. Only downside is I can't put the ignition in the "Acc" position.
From what Ive seen its dependant on manual vs auto and tilt or no tilt wheel. Still not sure if the years are interchangeable but I wouldnt see why not.
I too seem to have found the magic touch with it also, the problem is that its not my car!! my girlfriend hates that it starts when i take her car for no reason and doesnt start when she needs to get to work!
Thanks guys
