'00 Z24 Water Pump, Going Bad 1 Year After Replacement?

Hello, I have a noise coming from my 2000 Z24, Its coming from the timing chain side, it sounds louder near the firewall. It sounds like a rattling noise, kinda random, doesnt seem to speed up with RPM, but its hard to tell. Its been getting louder over the last few weeks.

About a year ago i got my water pump, timing chain, tensioner, etc.. replaced by my mechanic because of a similar sound. Paid $1400 CND and it didnt fix the sound. It turned out to be my B&M shift plus making my auto transmission pump cavitate. turning it off made the sound go away.. so $1400 for nothing really.. but atleast i had i new pump and chain.. so i was not too pissed.

But now a year later my mechanic is saying it could be the water pump again and wants $700 to replace it! Can a water pump die so quickly? Do you guys think its the water pump?

I notice a smell of coolant while driving now and then, i seem to be loosing small amounts.. where is this going? water pump weep?

I am going to replace my gaskets right now, only real way to figure out wehre the coolant is going is to inspect for leaks, i know my water pump only leaks when the engine is running, so try it out and see what it looks like. My whole pump isnt bad though, still pumps just fine, only looses coolant when driving, but mine leaks hella coolant..
