Ok, So, I thought my cv joint was going out due to some harsh burn outs... Well, This may not be the problem now. I dont know if our cars have axels or not, but it seems as if they do have axels, then this could be my problem. Is the cv joint the part that turns the wheel? Well, any way, here are my symptoms, When I hit a bump I hear a high pitched clunk, kinda like metal to metal contact. When I let out on my clutch, and the wheel starts to turn, I hear the same thing. But only when the wheels first start moving. I have heard a popping noise when turning the wheels, but it seems as if the noise has stopped. It kinda feels as if the cv joint (or axle, whatever turn's the wheels) has slack in it and is causing my noise. The car feels great, takes off good, no problems, but I dont want this turning into a major problem. So, could it be my cv joint?

ok, So, I have decided to replcace the whole axle... Is there anything else I need to buy except the axle itself? Do I need to buy the washer along with it, how about new boots? And do you think I need a whole new axle, or is there a cheaper fix? Like, do you think I am missing the washer?etc... Thanks you in advance.

Hmm where to start..
first CV joint is just a part of a CV shaft (Constant Velocity)... Generally the only reason they go bad is because the boot gets torn and all the grease leaks out of the joints, then you will hear a click when you turn.
Your problem doesnt really sound at all like a CV shaft problem so I would lift the offending side and shake the tire and see if you feel any looseness and if there is try to Isolate where it is coming from, could be the control arm bushings or really anything in the brake/steering-suspension system.
But if you do insist on replacing a CV shaft just buy either a brand new one for around 60$ or a reman'd with a core charge for 50$.I dont remember if there is a washer but if there is you can reuse the old one.

yeah it sound like a control arm. pretty common thing for these cars after a few burnouts.

like a control arm bushing? Or are we talking a cracked control arm? If it is cracked, then I do not see any obvious cracks in it. If it is a controol arm, wold I be able to feel it in wheel slack when shaking the wheel in the air?

I just checked for slack, and there is a VERY SMALL bit of slack from side to side, none up and down or any other direction. I mean, we are talking about 1-2 mm of play in side to side motion... Seems pretty normal for a 10 year old car.

Ok i'll help you out. But first off a cv axle will fail even if the boot isn't torn. When a cv axle goes bad when you turn while moving it will make a clicking noise. Also if you take and put the car in gear hold your foot on the brake while letting out on the clutch it should make a popping noise. You can take a cv axle apart but i wouldn't recommend it with out the proper tools and know how.
Just go to your auto parts store and tell them you need a cv axle for a 98 z24. Tell them what side as to the driver side is shorter and the passenger side. Tell them you want a new one most of them come with a lifetime warranty should be like $70. Don't get the re-maned ones because there junk. To change it you will need a 30mm socket for the nut on the end of the axle. Take off the ball joint nut and knock the spindle lose from the control arm. I also recommend taking the brake caliper off and zip tie it to the strut. Knock the axle out of the wheel bearing if it is stuck in there pretty good while pulling on the spindle. When you get it out the wheel bearing. Craw under the car where the axle goes in to the tranny with a pry bar stick it between the tranny and axle and pop it (pry on it real quick and it should pop out of the tranny. also you can re use the washer and nut, but the nut has to be tourqed.
Also when hit a bump and it make a clunk noise or pop noise it could be a strut mount, lower ball joint. If you can feel it in the steering then it could be the inner or out tie rods having play in them
wow, thanks for the info... I think I will be able to figure it out now. I am kinda leaning towards something with the suspension now though. Because it doesnt click when turning. But thanks for the great info.

well, I figured it out. It was a cheap A$$ brake pad clacking back and forth on the caliper. Thanks to everyone though!
