A couple days ago i noticed my car ticking, it sounds like a top end tick like something in the valve train. the car has also had a messed up idle only on start up, i would start the car it would idle for a bit and then all of a sudden it would drop and start to sputter/bog and then the motor would kick the revs back up, it would only do this when i start it, and sometimes when i try to take off it would bog like crazy and then finally drive like normal, and it would intermittently bog up when taking off from an intersection. The car also when accelerating normally you can feel it drive normally then goes rough for a second and continues doing this it does this all the time since i started hearing the tick. The idle/bogging problem has been going on for probably a month. I read some threads here that was saying that this noise could be a wrist pin, its a light high pitched tick not like a knocking rod. anyone have any advice or ideas about the idle and driveability problems and what i should do about the tick and what are any other possibilities for the tick.
the car is a 2001 auto Z24
the ticking sounds a little mysterious... how many miles are on it?
The sputter/bog out problem may be the fuel filter, fuel pump, or injectors. Have you changed the fuel filter recently? have you had the fuel pump pressure checked? and have you run some injector cleaner thru it lately?
My buddy had a ticking that sounded like it was comming from his valvetrain and it ended up being a rod bearing. I've got a video of it but it's hard to hear it in the vid.

last year mine started that same tick i just said, if it gets worse i'll fix it. so i headed for a 3 hour cruise to moncton, i blew up half way there. and it was the rob bearing.... i took it places and they all said valve tick....

injector cleaner was run through maybe 200- 300 km back, i was thinking its the filter but never got around to changing it, if i get the car fixed i will do it right away, since the day i started hearing the tick i havent driven the car cause i dont want to blow it up. This is the 3rd or 4th motor for this car, everytime its blown it was because the motor threw a rod. i have no idea how many kms are on it if i was to guess i would say maybe around 110 - 125kms are on the motor. what would be a reasonable price to pay to fix this? right now i am really fed up with the 2.4 and might fix it and trade it in for something as much as i do enjoy the car im just unlucky with it motor wise, oil changes every 3000km, gets mobil one, new plugs around every 6 months, just had the water pump and head gasket done and thought it would be fine. i dont even beat on the car.
now see, mine's got 165,000 kms on it, and i change the oil every 5,000. i don't know if the fuel filter has EVER been changed, But i will get around to it. Gonna try replacing teh TPS (throttle Position Sensor) to fix the higher idle and RPMs staying high after a good revving... does yours idle high as well?
PS - i run quaker state 10 30 in mine, change the oil filter every time i change the oil, and no ticks or unfriendly noises from the engine itself.
(2000 Sunfire GT, all stock)
mine doesnt idle high for an extended period, i would go start it, let it run for like a minute then all of a sudden the revs drop to where the car starts to struggle to stay alive then it kicks the revs back up and idles fine. i always put in 5w-30, filter changed everytime too, all the motors i get are all ticking time bombs. if it is a rod bearing what would the cost be to fix it if theres no other hidden damage????
i have the same noise, it sounds like its coming from the head but if you go under your car you defenilty can hear it in the pan. Just throw some lucas or marvel mystery oil and 20 w oil.i also got 146k miles Ive been driving mine like that for almost year and i stomp the gas regulary. By the way the car is for sale 2900 obo
