My name is Steve, my first post and I just bought a white 97 Z24 CAV with 214,000 miles. The prior owner has all the maintenance records since he bought it new and he has taken realy good care of the vehicle. It does have a few issues that I would like to fix and would make it a great daily ride.
The first problem is that you can't give it full throttle on acceleration or the car start bucking. It is almost lke the timing is off. When you first crank it up in the morning it idles crappy , might even die, restart and it idles fine the rest of the day. If you give it light throttle then it accelerates fine. My biggest concern is my wife trying to accelerate while trying to get on the freeway. The timing chain, plugs, fuel filter and air filter are all new. The check engine light is not on. I replaced the throttle position sensor thinking with that many miles it probibly needed a new one anyway. The fuel level sensor needs to be replaced since it always shows over half a tank.
The second is the air bag light stays on. Anyway to test and find the fault? Scan tool?
The third is the ABS light comes on and stays on after driving about 3 or 4 blocks. Anyone know the resistance on the sensors?
Will a scan with an scan tool tell me what I need to replace to get these faults repaired?
Thanks in advance
Took it to Advance this morning and they hooked the code scanner to it, No check engine light on and no CEL faults found. They can not help with the airbag or abs light. After looking thru the maintenance records I did find out that the former owner did have the fuel pump replaced not that long ago and it does not make any loud humming noises. I added some fuel injector cleaner to it to see if that might help.
All the abs sensors and wiring look good, no breaks or tears in the wiring.
I guess I will take it to the auto craft shop on the base and see what they can help me with the lights being on.
is there anything in the maintenance records about an O2 sensor?
If i disconnect the battery will it clear the airbag and abs stored codes? I know if there is a hard fault it will come back on. The abs light only comes on after I drive it a block or two. So I am sure I have to replace something to get it to stay off. Thinking the same with the airbag light.
Thanks
i am having a similar issue with my 97 z but i havent replaced the sensor or the fuel filter.

Looks like the ABS light problem has been narrowed down. After driving the car to work I stepped on the brakes hard this morning backing out of the driveway and the ABS light went out. It stayed off the 40 miles to work. It came back on again the next time I hit the brakes. After getting into the parking lot at work, I again pressed on the brakes hard and the light went out again. So either a sensor is bad or I might have to adjust the back brakes. Seeing the car is new to me I have no idea what condition the back shoes are in. Would worn rear shoes make the ABS light come on?
