My brakes make a chirping noise. As soon as I brake the chirp stops. I recall a mechanic telling me that if your brakes stop chirping when you press the brake petal, it means you need new brake pads. Or is it when you hear a noise while you press the brake petal that you need new brake pads?

when you hit the breaks and it stops the chirping, you need new pads, when you hit the breaks and it starts a squeaking noise, there is a brake squeak lube at auto zone for this.
