2.4 timing chain
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 11:13 AM
hey guys i just swapped an ld9 into my 01 z but i drive the car for no more than a week and i go to start the car one day and it wont start. When you hear the motor crank it pops out of the intake. Im almost positive that the timing is off. I am very worried about it tho because the car was idling really rough before this happened. So can someone tell me the best way to do the timing chain. And is it possible to do while it is still in the car?

How many miles, is the compression good, do you have proper spark?? All things you should be looking at before going after the timing set.

If you have to do the timing chain yes you can do it when it is in the car you juat need to support the engine (easyest with a jackstand and block of wood) , remove the motor mount and remove the crank pully and timing chain cover, simple but time consuming. just make sure your timing marks line up on the crank sprocket and you can get the pins in the cam sprockets

About a 30-45 min job. Done it to many times.

when you put the pins through the cam sprokets does that keep all the valves closed so if you accidentally turned crank to far when doing timing it wont bend a valve?

No, it keeps the cams in the correct position so that when you start the engine you dont bend the valves. Short of removing the cams you cant keep all teh valves closed at the same time.
