First off I just want to say that I am a diesel mechanic and am very mechanically inclined, just lost on this one.
Ok, when I am driving down the road the car will run great for about 10-15min when driving and then just die. I pull over and it will not start back up. If I wait about 10 min it will start back up, make it about 1/4 mile-1 mile then die again. If I let it sit for a few hours it goes back to the beginning again.
Now, if the car is just sitting at idle, if I give it throttle or not, and no matter the engine temp, it won't die. This only happens when driving down the road. No codes have popped up and I already replaced the ignition coils. I also put fuel cleaner in it, in the tank and through the intake just in case it is a fuel problem. When it is running, it runs just as it should.
Anyone have any ideas? I need to figure this out soon. Thanks in advance.
It sounds like you have a fuel pump problem, hook up a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to the rail (we tape them to the outside of the windshield) and watch the pressure as you drive. As it heats up it could loose pressure
Also check the Crank position sensor
I dont think it's the fuel pump because it is only when the car is moving and it runs great and just dies, doesnt stumble really at all. Plus like I said before i could sit there holding the throttle down when stopped and it never gets hot enough to die.
I will pull the CPS out and get it tested, but shouldnt that throw a code?
Anyone else have any idea?
Didn't throw a code for me
it isnt always obvious when its something like this. My sisters car had the same exact problem replaced the fuel pump and filter and it ran great. i would at least hook up a fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure to be sure. Sounds like fuel to me too

First suspect: fuel
Second: spark
when driving the engine is under load needing a higher fuel pressure and creates a higher load on the fuel pump as well.
I am going to change the fuel filter and check the pump this weekend and see what happens. If anyone thinks of anything else it would be great. Thanks.
check the ignition controle mod thats what it sounds like to me
i already changed the control module, i dont think its the fuel pump either because it doesnt get weak, it just drops when it dies (obviously)
ever think it could be a bad ecm,
Not sure if it is like this on all cavys but on my 01 2200, it has a sensor that shut's off the fuel pump if it goes under a certain amount of pressure. For instant, i found out the hard way the car will not start to stumble when i ran it out of gas once. As soon as it sensed the fuel pressure was low it just totally shut down the car with no warning. This could be why u don't feel a stumlbe, could very well be the fuel pump.
Not sure this can help, but check your alternator. I don't know how can it be related to stalling but mine car did something similar. Died after short driving and then didn't start, after few hours started great and then again died after short driving. Inspect the output voltage from alternator with voltmeter. Mine didn't charge the battery properly and the output current wasn't sufficient to keep car driving. So I changed the alternator. If your alternator is ok, inspect the wires.
I'd start with the fuel pressure gauge too... sounds like my 98 Z24 when I bought it last year - original fuel filter after 210,000 kms, it wasn't a pretty sight. Changed it on the side of the road, and WOW what a difference....
Now a year later, the pump actually has died.... but that's another story
