stripped oil drain bolt??

anyone have a good way to break loose a stripped oil pan bolt? It never occured to me to check the oil drain bolt when I bought the Benz, but apparently I should have. This thing is stripped to all hell. I've tried everything to get it off, but just is not happening.

anyone got some special trick to breaking it loose? any info is appreciated.

works magic. basically a socket with gnarley teeth on the inside.

use a circular grinder to slice a screw-like gash in it, then sick a screwdriver shaft in the gash and turn like a wrench. this happened to my buds tbird back in the day

Chisel and hammer or those things from sears. The guy who owned my Ninja butchered the drain plug with pliers and those craftsman bolt out things made getting it off a snap!

Should come right out

thanks for the unput guys.

Corpus - ill have to grab a set of those. I have one of the sockets thats supposed to fit to any size bolt and grip it, but it was tearing it up also.

Red devil - tried the vice grips and made matters worse, lol. what a PITA.

Marky, thats not a bad idea either. thanks

one more question.......you think all drain bolts are universal? i would think not, but who knows, since im gonna have to go get another one., just wondering if ill be able to grab one from autozone or have to go to the Benz dealer. If i have to go to the benz dealer it'll prolly cost a small fortune, lol

My experience with POS fords is that the bolts are not universal.

no they usually arent universal, with benz's there a lilttle different then others its pretty much a solid bolt like a 17mm or something like that. once u get it out if u find universal drain plug with the same thread size it may work but id play it safe and go to an auto store close to u.

they arent universal, but you might be able to look one up at the parts store, most of them carry drain plugs.

Check those thread too. sounds like it may have been cranked dwon and stripped. Those benz's have a heli-coil thread in the oil pan that if over tightened will often times come right out with the plug. they offer oversized plugs for this, or you can re-coil it.

I can get it out for you when you swing down to pittsburgh if you havent gotten it out by then, but i use a big set of hardcore pliers that i cant seem to find on snap ons site right now.

These will take out anything from anywhere. So long as you have enough room to swing them. They also have a larger version, but they have yet to fail me.

With Benz it would probably be a good idea to go to the dealer and get the correct one cuz if i remember right thats a steel drain plug in an aluminum pan and if the threads are not identical it could strip out the threads

An air chisel or just plain good old hammer and chisel normally works well. We've had to do this many a time at work.
