i was driving my sis' 2002 pontiac sunfire (2.2 mtx) to break in the new rotors and i turned on a side street and shifted into second well it wouldnt engage just go back so i stopped and tried the rest of the botto gears and it did the same but sometimes it wants to engage in second but when u take it out and put it back in it doesn't engage are the syncros done in the trans or what
it sounds like you broke a shift cable.. I had this happen to me and it turned out to be a shift cable.

Check under the hood where the Shift cables attach to the tranny
I broke a shift cable about a week ago, The shifter knob just wiggled around and wouldnt go in any gear at all. But it was stuck in 3rd, which let me drive it around somewhat. The part cost me about $200 and i put it in myself, which is a PITA!.
my buddy that has a 2nd gen neon had to replace his so he wouldnt break em for racing and he said he just had to pull em out and slide them back in.....where is a good place to get em and how exactly do u change em ive done everything to a car but that
junkyard will be cheapest, dealer will probably rape you with their price...
