Where did second gear go?
Monday, May 05, 2008 2:54 PM
My 03 Cavy has suddenly decided that it doesn't like second gear any more. I haven't had any problems or events leading up to this, like I haven't been bagging on it or missed a shift or anything that may cause it to break. When I shift to second and apply the throttle it just pops back into neutral. If I am decelerating, it will stay in second gear, but as soon as I touch the gas it pops out. If I try to hold it in gear, it will grind.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe a cable is stretched or something, and it is not fully engaging second gear?

I have the same problem, syncros are probably shot.

Welcome to the Getrag. You lost the second gear syncro. Been there about 4 times.

damn, that's no fun. Anyone have any ideas how costly it will be to fix, or should I look for a used transmission as a replacement instead?

Are the transmissions in these cars the same from 95-05? I'm having a hard time trying to find a 2003 or newer in the wrecking yards, but there are plenty of older ones that I could yard a tranny out of.

nope. if you've got the eco, you need an 02+ eco trans. the trans from the ohv and ld9 have different bellhouing patterns.

Just went through your exact situation. Would not stay in 2nd or 1st on mine though. I replaced the internalls that were messed in mine and even with my discount on GM parts (10% above cost) it cost me $450. I replaced 2nd gear, 1st/2nd gear syncro hub, 1st and 2nd gear syncro rings, 1st/2nd shift fork, and the shifter assembly (the part that goes into the trans that physically shifts the trans- 1st/2nd gear flange on it broke off).
