Hey all,
I am new here and I am glad to see a good forum for these cars. I come from nasioc.com as I drive a Subaru Impreza.
Anyhow, my friend has 2002 Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2 OHC engine. She just bought it and it has about 80,000 miles.
Recently, the coolant light came on. I looked at the coolant in the overflow and it was low. I filled it up.
It was fine for a little while, but the car is now dripping coolant. I have looked at it carefully and the coolant is dripping from the motor mount area below the crankshaft pulley.
I can not see exactly where the coolant is leaking from, but my guess is a leak from the water pump that is trickling down.
I have done my research here and found some good posts on the issue. My leak looks a lot like this one:

Can someone show me what the weep hole on the water pump looks like?
I think the water pump's weep hole is leaking and the water pump needs to be replaced, but I want to be sure.
Also, does anyone have tips or a photo tutorial on replacing the water pump on this engine? It looks fairly easy compared to some other engine layouts.
In addition, the oil filter on this car is a real pain to get at. Any tips on removing it?
It is very hard to reach, but near impossible to get at with an oil filter wrench. Please help me remove it for an oil change.
Thanks!

Yes, the water pump will need to be replaced to fix you problem. When mine when, it just puked one day, no warning from the weep holes. If this motor is the '2200' the water pump install will be quite easy with a shop manual. I just paid 400 for mine at the dealership because I didn't have the time.
As for the oil filters, just stab it with a screwdriver, and don't tighten it as hard next time. Another helpful trick is to take some tin foil and wrap the exhaust pipe.

Are you talking about the 2200 OHV or the 2.2L DOHC Ecotec?
any help on removing the filter, what we are suppoused to go to your house and remove the thing?
the water pump, well if it the Ecotec, book time is 4.5 hours NOT including a flush afterwards, the 2200 I dont know about

Thanks for the responses.
The engine is a 2200 OHC. So, this lay-out should be the easiest to work on.
Are any special tools required for the process of getting to the water pump and removing it?
As for the oil filter: I know how to remove it and all that. I have done many oil changes, but on cars with more accessible oil filters. What I was asking for were tips on getting a good grip on the filter to remove it for the 2200 OHC. I believe removing the passenger front wheel is the key, but I was wondering if there were other tips.
Thanks.

Water pump on an LN2 is easy, remove the serpentine belt, remove bolts on water pump (located under the alt.) install new water pump with new gasket and sealant, see attached PDF from chilton.
For the oil filter, I have never had trouble getting it from top side reaching behind the beast of a motor or reaching around the exhaust and turning it that way, once in awhile I have had to use a strapwrench to get it off (actually twisted the filter, it was on that tight)

rugid-one,
Thanks for the reply. Is the serpentine belt tensioner easy to remove on this engine? Also, do I need a special tool to hold the pulley while loosening the bolts on it from the water pump?
As for the oil filter, I have a plier-style oil filter wrench that works great for all oil filters except this one because I don't have enough clearance to turn it. Thanks for the tips, though. I may have to pick up a strapwrench if that is the type that works best in this situation.
