I have a 2000 sunfire with 88000 miles on it. When I shift into drive or reverse from park there is a small clunk. It is large enough that I can feel it in the car. This clunk become larger when going between drive and reverse or after the car has been driven. Do you have any suggestions to what this is and what I need to do about it?
Thank you
Check your transmission mounts. My 79 grand prix did the same thing, but I didn't worry about it too much.
If your mounts are good try some new fluid.

^^you only have one tranny mount. it could be that, but motor mount is more likely. there are two....upper and lower.
suggestions......get new mounts
Replace your motor mount. My wife's car does the same thing, finally went out and looked at it, the little rubber piece completely fell out of the mount so the engine is free to rock back and forth a couple inches before it slams into the metal outer housing of the mount. It's been this way for over a year, finally bothers her enough to pay the 20 bucks or so for a new mount.

motor mount, torque strut, and trans mount. get them all replaced or do it yourself. its not very hard. i did them all in an hour and 30 minutes. 105K miles and its running perfect now. you can also just throw the RK sport inserts in there, it will stop the clunk, but the car will shake like mad at idle. lol
Hey Guys,
My lower motor mount was bad and I replaced it. The engine now moves less when shifting from reverse to drive but the noise level is louder coming from the engine bay. My ATF level is at the full mark. Any more suggestions before I take it to someone?

Check your serpentine belt and, then, pulleys. I don't know if you have the 2200 or 2.4(fill out your profile

) but I just replaced the idler pulley on my 2200 and the reduction in engine noise is amazing.
hey how do I check an upper engine mount? I can see the one on the passenger side and it looks just fine. what is an acceptable tolerance for the engine to move when reved or just shaken? When I try and move the engine the whole car moves.
thanks
aslo what the is the rpm when you are putting it into drive or reverse...

idle which for me is 1000rpms
I think you are having the same problem I am having, but instead of a clunking noise I am getting a grinding noise. The noise only happens when shifted from reverse to neutral, drive to neutral, or reverse to park.
