re-using head bolts (2 months old)
Saturday, May 03, 2008 6:09 PM
I just replaced my head like 2 months ago, put brand new head bolts in it... Now i spun a bearing. gotta pull the engine apart and have it re-done... i know you are not supposed to re-use head bolts... but considering mine are brand new and maybe only had 1000 miles on them.... can i still use them? or just scrap them and get new?

And how about gaskets... same deal... they are all brand new... which can I re-use, and which will i have to scrap and buy again?

rather not have to buy another $200 gasket set.... but rather not have a big leak and have to tear the engine out again either.

No. They are torque to yeild bolt. Which means they are a one time use bolt and cannot be reused.

As for the gaskets, i would get new. Better being safe than sorry.

x2. no reason to cheap out if you're pulling the engine.

ok... well what about ARP head studs? are those re-usable? or is that a one use thing as well?

i know alot of the gaskets in the kit are rubber re-usable ones.... and probably 40% of my kit was unused anyway...

so i really hate to spend another $200 on a full set... can you buy individual gaskets? and can i get away with re-using my re-usable ones... (cam cover to cam tower, timing cover, etc)

I assume my head gasket is trash now eh? (i was thinking about going with a cometic or something anyway, now that i am having the block machined)

buying individual gaskets is a possibility, depending on how many you need however, it can get costly. yes, the rubber/silicone gaskets can be reused. however, head gaskets, any foil, metal, or paper gaskets, MUST be replaced. i would ask arp if their studs could be reused, as i myself am not sure.

Yeah you can buy individual gaskets. Go through NAPA. I bought all the gaskets/bearings I could possibly need separate for far cheaper than it would have been to buy the "set", it's hilarious.

ARP head and main studs are reusable. Most of teh gaskets can be reused. the HG is junk now. I would avoid Cometic if at all possible. The stock graphite one is more than capable of handling a lot of abuse.

Yes ARP studs are re-useable, as long as you do not blow a head gasket. ARP told me that it you are rebuilding a motor because of bottem end failure to re -use them, but head gasket failure do not reuse.
