3rd spun bearing

I have a 96 LD9 5spd. I just spun my rod bearing for the 3rd time. the other 2 times i have had the crank turned and it was fine for about 5000 miles but then starts a little knock and pow. I run 89 octane and do all my usual maintenance on or before it is due. I do not drive extremely hard but to get on it sometimes. I have an oil pressure gauge and always seem to have good oil pressure.

So my ? is would puttin oversized bearings in help out or are there really no alternatives and maybe i just need to put in a new(er) crank?

Use the correct size bearing for the diamiter of your crank journal. If you had the crank turned but put a stock size bearing back in you just wasted a lot of time and money. Get a GM reman crank and then get the correct size rod and main bearings and you should be ok.

You've got a blocked oil passage in the crank or the block. Most engines feed oil to the rotating assembly through the main bearings. Then the crank has passages in it to feed the rod bearings. If the crank is sludged up then the rod wont get lubricated. If the main bearing gets spun a little out of place, it might provide enough lubrication to keep the crank going without feeding the rod. RECON makes great remanufactured crankshafts and they come with matched bearings. I would recommend starting from scratch if this has happened before. Get a reman crank with matched bearings, and replace the rod or rods that are the problem with reman rods. While you have the crank out, make sure the oil gallery above the crank is clear.

awesome, thanks for the advice guys. one more ? this cavy is more or less my daily driver so could i take the crank to a shop and have them turn the journal and then measure out the right oversized bearing to get me through till i can order the reman crank and bearings? i have heard that there are a couple companies who sell oversized bearings
