So first to start... love the site lots of info here.
and i did attempt a search first and it really didnt find anything.
and one more thing this car is not mine only a friends and im trying to fix it for him...
so anyway as the thread title states my friends 2000 2.2liter with about 90,000 will not start unless you hold the gas pedal down.... then after that IF it wants to keep running it will run like absolute @!#$... but if the gas is held down in the higher rpm range it seems to run smoother...a lot smoother
so does anyone have any ideas?... my initial thought was the fuel pressure regulator but im really not sure any help or input is much appreciated
Also it is an automatic... and the head gasket was replaced less than 5000 ago
I would check over all the vacum lines on the car then go from there. Is it throwing a check engine light or anything like that?

2009 Ford Mustang V6
When you floor the throttle while starting the car it should enter "clear flood mode". More fuel is required at higher rpms. So i would say that the engine is getting too much fuel or the spark isnt up to par and not igniting the fuel/air.
ITs throwing a Random Missfire Code.... . and the exhaust is clean...but VERY hot like it almost burned my hand... Now normally im able to keep my hand there for a quick second... but it just seems abnormally hot for exhaust...but then again im not sure on the 2.2 So is there anyway of going about checking the spark issue?
Check the plugs and clean them if they're fouled then check for spark, if you have both, go to fuel pressure testing, might be going lean.

i know there is spark.. i pulled three plug wires and got shocked by each one.. i know kinda stupid and painful way to check but it works....
Misfires ... hot exhaust.. ---- sounds like the catalytic converter is shot....
this will be caused by the misfires... so you'll need to fix that problem as well... (otherwise you'll kill another cat)
the coils could be starting to go... (which will cause an intermitant outage, which will cause unburned fuel to run to the cat, but still spark)... i would start from there

exactly what i was thinking... the cats probably shot... but you have to remember a cats not just gunna die on its own... there no moving parts in it... something kills it!...
car was taken to the auto shop to get looked at...supposedly its the head gasket...and now that i think about it.. i did look at the reservoir with the cap off and it did surge up enough to over flow out... does that seem normal or is that head gasket really shot... im a little shady on the mechanic he took it to...but that guy does have tools i don't have... so is there any other way i can check myself?
four possible signs if it is a head gasket...
1) milky looking oil
2) milky or oil looking antifreeze
3) tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust (being antifreeze mixing in to the cyl during combustion)
4) signs of a leak between the head and block
from what you have said above... i dont think it is the head gasket
maybe it's running rich at idle. I think when you floor it when you start the car, it shuts the injectors off from pumping, so the engine does not flood out cranking over.
Everynow and again i won't hold the starter on long enough and it'll stall, then it'll be hard to start unless I hold the gas pedal to the floor.
