If you hook up hpt to your car and check for a RPM reading and get none it this the way to check the crank position senser?
My 98 cav z24 wont start and i have fuel. ran like crap then died and hasnt started since. i thought if it was a coil it would still run on two cylinders. How would you check the module ?
Need that baby fixed asap without spending to much money on guessing.
THanks for the help
it 'could' be your crank sensor, or other things, but swapping or testing the sensor is probably the first thing you'd want to try. alot of people go and buy new coils thinking thats the problem and it doesn't fix it (sadly alot of mechanics do this also). have you read your obd2 codes? those might help you out. you can test the sensor by removing it, attaching a voltmeter to it, and move a flat metal blade (screwdriver or something) across it to see if it gives a '5 volt reference signal'...do this plenty of times just to be sure...if there is no reading than it is faulty.
in my case i couldn't get a
whole 5 volts, but it was still good, i just happened to have a bunch of tranny fluid all over the plug and wires.
good luck, keep posted.

Engine reads rpm from the CPS, so I'd most likely agree its your problem. Check the connection first. Is your Tachometer in the car reading properly?

thank s guys i will be checking her out on saturday, tack seemed fine when it was running. But if i scan the car with hpt it might tell me some past engine codes right?
1)will it register rpm when i try to start it?
my car threw both the crank shaft position and cam shaft position sensor... the first go around i only had a code for CKP (crankshaft)... while the camshaft had a code and freezeframe...
this is what the car was doing... if i drove it under 3000 RPMs, it drove fine... but if i took it past 3, and especially if the engine was cold, it felt like i was running on 2 cyls for maybe 30 sec to 2 minutes... like 5th gear at 50 MPH it rumbled like it was going to stall out... then it was fine... it only started acting funny when i took it past 3 grand... and the only time i could replicate it 100 % of the time was when the engine was cold.... also when it happened, or when i took it past 3 grand and it didnt happen, the CEL would blink for 15 seconds
i changed the cam shaft sensor... it helped... a little... i didn't get the lag/loss of cyls as much, but the CEL would still blink at high RPMS, and the next time i scanned it a few weeks later... the CKP showed freeze frame info, at one time saying an error occured at 12000 RPMS.
i swapped it out... the only problem i have now, is once in a blue moon, if i peak out 3rd gear, (like 5800 RPMS) and shift in to fourth... i dont feel like i lost any cyls, but it feels like the RPMs are crawling slowly up in fourth... and feels like i shifted in to fourth at 2500 RPMS... its just slow for a sec or two

If you change your CKP (crankshaft position sensor), you need to perform the relearn procedure... you'll need a scan tool with the relearn procedure built in to it...
can't you just unhook the battery for a while so it will relearn?

I hope so i dont have a scan tool, just hpt.
What happen was one day i was coming home and car started sputtering then died and so i tried ot start ntohing, let it sit and it started went down the street to get gas stalled again thought it out of gas so i put 6 bucks in nothing, it finally starter and run like crap like two cylinders or sometihng very rough. let sit it ran fine for the next copuple of days. saturday it started sputtering on the way to woork again and died after a bit - same thing, came out afrter work and it run fine, that ngiht saemt hing. but sunday stalled and now i got nothing just cranks.
Not looking forward to working on it at all. Whats this relearn stuff? mines a 98?
no... the relearn procedure programs to ECM to the CKP... once you hook up the scan tool (such as Snap On Motis or Genesis) and start the procedure, it will tell you to rev to like 4200 or 5200 RPMS but do not exceed it... then it will be properly learned...
