i have a 1997 sunfire 2.2L 3 spd auto. randomly my car will make this loud high pitched mettalic scrapping type of sound, and it doesnt matter what engine speed it is because the sound increases in speed with engine rpms. it mostly seems to do it when the engine is hot. i also tryed to check to see if it was the a/c compressor by turning on the a/c, but it made no difference in sound. what do you guys think? bad water pump? bad tensioner? help please and thanks.

try pulling your belt off and starting it....if there is no noise then it's one of your pulleys, then all you have to do is check them to see which one it might be.
