Rear brakes locking up
Tuesday, April 01, 2008 5:48 PM
My cavalier has been sitting for a few days and I was going to move it out of the garage and put my other car in there. Well when I started to back out i pressed the brakes and the rear pass side dipped down considerably and the wheel locked up, I drove it around the block and it went back to normal after that. Im thinking it could be the struts or it needs new rear shoes. Also the emergency brake was off lol.

No. You need new wheel cylinders, or you can hone and re-condition the current ones if you know how.

I went thru this 2 months ago-replace the wheel cylinders,(I had to loosen the hubs on mine to get clearence to get them out) and grease the backing plate at the points where the shoes cantact so they slide freely. A world of difference after wards.

I think I have this problem, but I just want to make sure. Last summer I changed my rear brakes, and it was extremely difficult getting the drum back on, due to lack of clearance. Nonetheless, I got it on, and it was grabbing, but I figured after driving a little bit it would wear them down, and everything would be fine. Well I went to change my winter tires today, and I wanted to paint my drums, so I tried to take them off, and they are still grabbing. I'm sure this also explains my bad gas milage. So, what could the problem be? It cant be the drums right? It has to be the wheel cylinders?

no
could be that when you did the brakes you had them out of adjustment, or maybe you put them together wrong? I know with new shoes you have to bring in the adjusting wheel (can't remember the name).

Well, when I did them I know I did them right. I put the self adjusting screw at the bottom all the way in. Inevitably, it self-adjusts and it came out a little bit, so I tried just tightening it back up. So now I have break pads at like 60% pad left with the self-adjsuter tightened at max, and the drum goes on smoothly, and the wheel turns easier, still not perfect but better. But what do I do when I inevitably change the pads again, I don't want to keep dragging all the time.
