hi gyus i am new here, i was wondering if you could help me out on this one, heres the problem, i have a 1997 z24, a couple of months ago, i parked at gas station and when i tried to start the car, i didnt even make a sound, i get all the lights in the dash, but when i turn the key i wont do a thing, since its a manual , i checked the little botton in the clutch pedal, and by-passed, but nothing happened, all the fuses were fine and me and my battery was fine as well, so me and my friend pushed the car and start it in 1st gear, after the car started, i parked and turn it off to see if it would start from the switch, and it was suddenly fine, then a couple of weeks ago same thing happened and once again i pushed the car and started with the gearbox, then last week i was parked in a place where i couldnt push the damn thing so i romove the box before the throttle so i can see the starter, put the key in on and used a screwdriver to make a contact between the two wires in the starter, and it started, so i think its the switch because i wont make any sounds and when you make the contact directly in the starter it works normaly, anyways i dont wanna spend money in things i dont really need, i hope you guys can help me thx
pd : sorry for my bad english
Hi Wiliam
I think you either have:-
1. A fault in the wiring from the ignition switch to the Starter Solenoid (The part with the two studs you shorted to make it start) On this part there should be a smaller gage wire which comes from the ignition switch, through the clutch pedal switch (You bypassed this).
Can you disconnect this small wire on the Starter Solenoid and check you have +12 volts to Engine Block earth/ground (negative), with the key in the "Start" position, using a test lamp or meter?
or
2. If this test is OK and you are getting +12 volts with the key in the "Start" position, you probably have a bad Starter Solenoid--I have just, yesterday, bought one for a Tractor at NAPA.. I imagine you can buy them at most parts stores.
Hope this helps

I had a somehow similar problem, it turned out to be the Ignition starter switch cost about $40 ordered from rockauto.com. first I changed the switch on the brake pedal (mine is an automatic) and it was not the cause of the problem. What my car was doing was that when I turned the key to the start position it was taking about 2 seconds to make contact so I used to think that the switch on the pedal was faulty and I stepped on it harder but nothing happened. By the way the Ignition starter switch is not the cylinder of the lock it is an electrical component that goes behind the lock and you have to replace it from the other side of the steering column and it is attached with two small torx screws one of them is hard to get at.
hey guys thanks for the heklp it turned out to be the starter solenoid, and the big rotor piece in the middle of the starter, i realized it cuz i put a cable directly from the solenoid to the batterty and nothing happened so i had to take out the starter last week and now its fine again, bad thing its that i also realized i have the pipe from the radiator to the egine leaking, apparently this hasnt been a nice week i just want it to be over lol
