I hate to only post when I have issues with maintenance but this is my daily driver and is GREAT on gas. But whats the use of having a daily driver you have to fix on more than your project car?!
I have a 5spd 2000 cavalier 2.2L. My check engine light came on a few days ago on my way to work. On my way home I was running low on gas and my car stalls out 1 mile from my house. Thinking it ran out of gas I went to the gas station and put some gas in but it still does not start. At first, it would crank and start but die down 2-3 seconds later with a loud *thud* from the engine bay. Now it wont start at all and just crank.
I just replaced all spark plugs and wires, banged on/near fuel pump but car still wont start. My battery and connections are fine as well. From searching through other posts I'm assuming its either..
1)Module $165.00 from Autozone
2)Ignition Switch
3)Fuel Pump
4)Dirty Fuel Filter
Please help me out with advice on what I should do or try to replace first. Thank you very much!
**Note to self** If the check engine light comes on in these cars, stop whatever your doing and take it straight to get it diagnosed.
Try the fuel filter first.

also.... if your CEL is still on.... it would be a good idea to scan the car and see whats causing it..... if your lucky it could point you in the right direction.
Thanks for the quick replies, and thank you Weebel. It seems your helping a few people put this morning with their cars. Ill try the fuel filter first but I just have a bad feeling its something else.. Any other opinions?
Everyone always says fuel filter first but has any one ever had a bad fuel filter? i would say put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see if its getting has. I am saying the pump
I've had a clogged filter. That happened after my tank was near empty--I guess there was sludge/dirt in the tank and it all got pumped out. I tried everything except changing out the fuel filter. Now I carry a spare in the glove box just in case. Also, I dont let the car go below 1/4 tank.

I was going to say fuel pump by the way you described it...but the CEL makes me curious. unless is a P1599 stall code.
If I werent a tech with a huge amount of tooling I'd go to a sears or harbor freight tools and buy a fuel pressure guage to see if you have any. My service advisor has a 00 vert and it ran out of gas and would then die on her way home from work, 10 miles or so.
The foreman replaced the IDI internals and crank sensor before I made him stop wasting her money by throwing the parts store at it. Hooked my FP and went for a drive, sure enough as soon as the pump needed to deliver a large amount of fuel under WOT the fuel pressure would drop out.

You can pick up a fuel pressure test kit for about $40.00 at autozone. On an eco you should have around 55psi, not sure about the LN2

My buddy had his fuel filter plug up in his 2000(i believe) LN2 cavy. We were on our way home from the bar on his b-day and saw him sittin on the side of the road. (dont worry, we had DDs). Four of us ended up pushing his car about 1 mile down the road before we said the hell with it and jumped in the other car.
