04 Eco ICM probs
Saturday, January 26, 2008 10:07 AM
I have searched, and found the reason for my car running bad. I was throwing P0300. I replaced the ICM, problem solved. A week later, same thing. Thought I had recieved a bad one, so I replaced the brand new ICM with another. Problem solved again, or so I though. The newest ICM lasted about a month, and then, bam, it went bad again. If anyone has any ideas as to what could be making them go out so fast, I would love to hear them, Thanks.

I think someone else recently had a similar problem - and it turned out to be a problem with where it was grounded to the engine. I don't have one to look at, but I would make sure that anywhere it has to make a ground connection that it is very clean - not corroded. If those spots appear to be corroded, try to clean them as much as you can and re-assemble it. It may have allowed damage to the previous ones if this was the problem, but there's also a possibility that it was the ONLY problem. I remember working on early '90s GM V6's that had this problem where the ignition module under the coil packs would not make good contact with the mount on the engine. I realize that yours is integrated into a cover on the top, but I would bet that it requires a good connection to the valve cover to work properly.
That's what I would check first, anyway.

i have 3-4 of the coil packs if you need one, the black plastic is broke on the corners of them but they still work fine.

What kind of spark plugs do you have in the car?

Bosch platinum plus 4's, why?

I just threw this code in my car. I have Bosch Platinum +2's.

I hear the ICM doesn't like those multi-electrode plugs. I needed to replace the ICM and car's running fine.

As I said before, I have replaced it twice now. I am going to go to the dealership on wednesday and see if the ICM needs to be programed, or if there is something else causing them to go out.

I went to the local dealership and they told me that GM put out a letter saying not to put "aftermarket plugs" into the eco's. They said that the only approved plugs for them are delco's. I wound up having to replace the whole base that the ICM goes into. $450 and a month later and all is still well. Hope this helps.

Oh, and it may be a good idea, if anyone has the ability, to possibly post a sticky about plugs so that others don't run into this problem, as I have found it to be semi-common among us eco owners. Thanks!

USE ONLY AC DELCO PARTS, SAME STUFF THAT COMES ON YOUR CAR.

Why is this so hard for people to get. I work at Nissan, and using non - Nissan parts etc. does make a difference

I have this problem also. Im on my 5th icm. I am seriously thinking of going with MSD setup. If i would have done if off the bat i would have actually saved money by now.
I think it might have to do with the heat with it being on top of the valve cover!!! but who knows.

I've got about 1,000 miles on my ACDelco ICM now and it's running fine. Switched out the Bosch's for ACD Iridiums as well.
