Hello all! I thought I'd post this in case anyone else has had this problem.
On Thursday, I got in my '05 LS SC and the daytime lamps were acting all screwy. The relay was clicking and the light was flashing on the dash. The last time this happened, I had a headlight out. I got a new set of headlamps and since I work nights at a shop, I installed the lights while at work. The DRLs were doing the same thing. The right low beam was out and when you switch to high beams, the right would light while the left high beam was out. Switching the lamps produced the same results. Long story short, this morning after checking the BCM reactions with my scanner as per the book, jumping some connections with the multifunction switch removed, and checking the headlight/foglight wiring harness that runs through the nose of the car, I discovered that due to massive corrosion at some butt-connected wires in the harness, the DRL signal wire to the r/s headlight was broken.
I ended up completely removing the front headlight/foglight harness from the car from the connector under the battery tray forward. I separated the looms and tape and discovered that when the car was repaired from the collision back in '06, instead of replacing the harness (which they billed the insurance company for...another issue which I will deal with later), they used a handfull of butt connectors to repair the harness. Every butt connector had corrosion on it and like I said, the one that was for the DRL signal was broken inside the harness. I cleaned the harness with some Brakleen, replaced all the butt connectors with soldered, heat shrinked connections, and wrapped everything back up. Problem solved.
You may not realize how much moisture gets up in the engine compartment and the exterior body of the car but there's no excuse for using cheap butt connectors without adaquate protection from corrosion. BTW, while I was in there, I removed the cheap piggyback connectors for my B&M Shift Plus and redid the connections with some shrink tube. Those were corroded as well. If I had this much corrosion on my '05, everyone out there must have some on their car to some extent unless you keep your Cavvy or Fire in a climate controlled garage and only drive it on nice days.
yes i had problems with my headlights to find out there were many corroded wires....fixed the and its all good
