Removing the o2 sensor.
Wednesday, March 05, 2008 3:55 PM
Im loosing my mind here, i've been needing to get my self an o2 sensor so i decided yesterday that i didnt want to pay 80 dollars to buy a new one at the moment but instead i'd go to pick and pull to get one and even if it only lasts a few months im not to bothered for $2.50.
Anyway i spent a good 2 hours trying to pull the manifold off a sunfire there so i didnt have to buy a special o2 sensor socket but in the end i gave up because i couldnt undo the last few bolts and it was getting late. Today i decided i would buy the socket i needed because i really need to replace my old sensor. 16.45dollars later i finally have the socket, i CANNOT believe they charge that much for a socket. So i go to pick and pull again but i cannot pull the sensor off with it, i ended up having to take the manifold off to remove it which i managed to do so i was quite pleased with myself. I get home to change it hoping i can change it by just using the socket as i dont want to remove a load of stuff and the manifold as its my DD. I have been fighting for the last 2 hours trying to remove it, i've used penetrant spray, several different sockets but there is no way its coming out and there is no room to move the god damn ratchet. Does anybody have any advice on how to remove them without having to tear apart half the car. Im loosing my mind here.

Sorry for the Rant and thanks in advance.
I suppose i did learn quite a lot though through trying to remove it, I removed several different mounts and engine part including the manifold/header so ive gained a bit more experience i suppose which is good but i really cannot remove the sensor. Please help.

Ok i bumping this just because i really cannot figure out how to remove it. For those of you who can't be bothered to read my essay (and i dont blame you) I'm trying to remove the upstream o2 sensor, im using the o2 sensor socket but there is no room to move the ratchet very much and i can hardly lever it very much theres to many things getting in the way. I have sprayed it with wd40 but it won't loosen up either. Any ideas on how to get it out?

you could get a torch and heat that bastard up, then spray some more. Repeat as necessary.

You shouldn't need the socket on the 2200. You should have enough clearance even w/ the stock manifold to use an open end wrench.

If all else fails, get a deep well non-O2 socket, cut the wire off your old one and, if need be, force the socket down. Grab an extension, swivel, and cheater bar.

i think you wasted time, energy, money and gas. o2 sensors are notoriously hard to get out. and IM betting even if you get the junkyard o2 out, the threads are going to be ruined. hate to rain on your parade.

good luck with that

Junk yard one thread is good, that one was pretty easy to remove. But thanks for the heads up anyway

Thanks for all the rest of the advice im going to wait until Saturday so i have a full day to mess around with it.
Im also starting to think i wasted my time with the socket, and i cant believe they charge 16 dollars for it. Anyway thanks again guys

i cant keep O2 sensors in my car, as soon as i replace one the other one goes, not sure of any easy ways to get em out as i always take it to a relatves garage and they work on it but last time it took wd-40, a torch and a lot of force.

Try using PB Blaster instead of wd-40. Does wonders for me.

either soak it in pb blaster or heat it with a torch.

Ok so it's now out. I managed to loosen it using a wrench, for some reason i didn't think of using the box end side the last time but i managed to get it on and loosen it then i used the socket to completely pull it out all the way and the new one is now in.

Thanks for all the help.

Yeah there somewhere around that last time i checked, obviously thats direct fit though, just plugs right in, you can buy universal ones for about half the price but then you have to wire it in and im not up for doing that quite yet.

$16 isnt @!#$ for a socket, I have sockets from Snap On $40-$50 a piece, the spark plug socket for Nissan Versas $38.75 just to name one of them

Oh no don't get me wrong i know 16 isn't a lot for a socket compared to tools made by Snap on and Mac, but it seems it to me, at least until i get my apprenticeship and purchase some good ol' snap on stuff then i won't be complaining so much
