Airbag light is on. What should I check?
Thursday, March 06, 2008 6:30 PM
Last weekend I swapped the dash pads and the front bumpers between my '02 Sunfire Sedan and '02 Sunfire GT. I have swapped both the dash pad and front bumper numerous times before with no problems whatsoever. When I started the GT to move it out of the garage the airbag light was on. I searched through this forum and found that everyone was saying to check the fuse and disconnect the battery for thirty minutes. I did both and the airbag light is still on. I am planning on taking the dash pad off again this weekend and making sure everything is connected and all. I am just wondering if there is anything specific I should double check? Also, if I can't find anything that's not connected or pinched or anything like that, will that mean it needs to go to the dealer? Thanks in advance.

Check the airbag wiring under the dash. Obvious as hell, it's all yellow. Also, make sure you didn't 'bump' the airbag sensor on the front rad support. If it's in the 'on' position, the ECU will throw a fault code (thank god, or alot of people would have airbags blowing up in their faces when they turn the key).

What does the sensor on the radiator support look like?

Have you had the passenger seat out in the process? If so check the connection to the airbag control module under the passenger seat. When I replaced my dash (had the seats out) my knee rested on this (but I did not realize). I disconnected it and this is what happened (the light came on). If you have acces to a good scan tool that works as well.

Will a scan tool tell me exactly what's wrong? I want to try everything I possibly can before having to take it to the dealer.

Nope, the seats have not been removed.
