TRAC control Light
Thursday, March 06, 2008 4:51 PM
I am driving a 2001 sunfire SLX, recently had the ABS light come on and Trac control is stuck to off, was told that trac control is stuck off because of the ABS sensor thats causing the ABS light to come on, replaced wheel bearings and ABS sensors, the A BS light has gone away but traction control is still stuck to off, i dont care as i prefer it that way, but still would like to know whats wrong and causing it to be stuck off.

Sunfire SLX?

My car has had a "finicky" Trac Off light for years now. Never did pursue trying to figure out why it does it from time to time.

x2... It is on my 01Z, and I just havn't cared to look, but i'm guessing a wire going to the ABS or transmission must be worn or torn open. Most of the time it is when it is wet out that mine happens, but I've been lazy and not really checked. I will this weekend when I have Saturday off...

I've driven GM's with Trac control and for the most part it works pretty well. But ever since day 1 in the Sunfire, whenever it came on, it seemed like the car just lost all power/bogged down. I wouldn't mind disabling it completely, to be honest.

It works by retarding timing, and might even cut some fuel, all to control wheel spin in ice, snow, etc.

Check your parking brake. If you pull it up slightly it will turn off the traction control. I guess this allows the user to turn it off selectively. Maybe there is a problem with the switch in the parking brake.

I agree with Agent Omega... I have an '02 Cavalier LS Sport with the DOHC and when its wet out or extremely hot out my traction off light turns on and the car bogs down severely. I posted about it over the summer and got no response. I'd love to disable it or at least fix it. Someone with more mechanical skills than me willing to get on this? Let me know what you find.

And I'm back to the situation where its causing the car to stall out... I've replaced the MAP sensor so I don't think its that... it only happens when the trac off light is lit. Obviously its limiting power, but it does it at low rpm's too and kills it. Any suggestions?
