alrighty, i did a search, typed defrost and i didnt really find what i needed to find. i went through all 5 pages. i also searched defroster and mostly everything that popped up was for the rear defrost. i just wanted to ge t that outta the way before i get flamed for asking this.
on my 04 cavalier my heat works extremly good. nice and hot. but it only blows out the vents. wont switch between floor and crap, and it wont defrost. and when i switch it to defrost (all the way to the right) it wants to spring back to the next slot. and if you hold it, it stays there after a while, but still not defrost. what the heck? is the switch bad or the vacuum lines? could the cable that accuates the door be broke? i am asking this before i tear apart my dash this weekend, just wondering if this has been a problem for anyone else. i have seen threads about the cable breaking, and re drilling a hole with a new screw.
my other problem is when i turn my wipers to intermitten they like to freeze for a couple seconds between cycles. like i mean freeze in the middle of the windshield for like 2.2 seconds then keep on moving. anyone else have this problem?
I read about this same problem. I believe the cable that controls your doors is binding up. I would search, but its late and i need to get to bed.
i got an 04 and when i first got it i had the same problem. its an easy fix....no need took take your dash apart, get on your back under the dash and look at the vent control from behind. You will see a "steel" like wire, it might be bent. Check the wire and follow it to the plastic piece it connects to, i think its white with a nipple on it (best way i could describe it). That part is what controls your vents and such make sure everything looks good and the wire is attached to both and not bent or anything. If you move the white piece all the way down you can move the vent knob over to where it should be and reconnect the wire and so on. But it sounds like its just kinked. if you have any other questions send me a pm or repost here ill try and check back..... GL
it is the cable. i crawled under the dash. watched the cable as i turned the knob and it wont slide in and out of the sleeve. its like stuck in the all the way out position. NOW WHAT lol. it snowed pretty bad last night and this morning was hell without a front defrost. i tryed aiming my vents up but that didnt work.
unhook the wire from the white part i described above and manually move the piece to the defrost position for now till you can fix it
i followed it. does it connect on the driver side up by the pedals?
my wipers do that too, I HATE THEM!

that's the one. i had to replace one at work because it was doing the same thing. the one i replaced was kinked up and when you would try to change the door positions the knob would just spring back. kinda uncomfortable to get at, but not a horrible job. i ended up taking the dash apart and removing the hvac controls so i had some room to work and see. not a horrible job to do.
