How long do blower motor resistors typically last?
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 6:34 PM
I know there's the sticky about how to change it, as I've done it more than once now. My third one just lost the low speed yesterday. At least the very first one went just before the warranty was up.
I was just wondering how often everybody finds these things failing. To me, this is a silly thing to have to change every 2 years. My older cars always used coils instead of resistive traces on a PCB - and I NEVER had to change one.
I was also wondering if anybody has had better luck with any aftermarket supplied parts - in other words, not GM's. I haven't looked around here (in Canada) too much to see what else may be available, but if i could find one that I'm unlikely to have to replace again, I'd be very grateful.
I'm not going to bother replacing it until the weather gets a little nicer out anyway, so I'm just hoping that maybe there's a more reliable replacement out there somewhere.
The other angle is - WHY do these keep dying? Is there maybe something else wrong with my blower motor causing too high a current draw, burning these out? If it was just me, I'd be more suspicious - but obviously I'm not alone. I've changed out these in 3 other J-bodies as well over the last few years.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

I'm on my third. Mine last about 3 years then blow again. I normally let it be until a second line fails.

My 97 has had a single replacement, about 5 years ago. No problems since.
