wow just noticed how illiterate i was with the title the first time. (not that im some linguistic savant)
anyway heres a catchup story
-my engine is knocking
-took off the oil pan to check for blown barrings
-found
this in my pan
next day...
-started working on the engine again.
-stripped a bolt that holds on the cover for the oil pump chain (any tips?)
-got frustrated
-went to go take apart a spare blown engine i have
-took off pan and pump to find a blown piston and broken rod and
this
so i have found the same mysterious item in two different engines. one thats about to blow up and one that already has...
someone has to know what this is!!!
(sorry the grout looks disgusting^^^)

A second post to find a different answer to the same question.
You are an idiot.

Didn't you say it was magnetic? Could Chevy have placed these in the oil pan to attract shavings in the oil in addition to the end of the drain plug?
Ok, I asked my father to look at your picture becuase I was clueless, and he said it was part of a wristpin. The damage in the second engine would support that theory. I guess there is one of those things on each side of the piston, so I would say, knowing this, that one of your pistons is cracked on one side near the wrist, allowing this to come out, and causing your engine knock no doubt. And I would also guess your motor will be blown very soon.
Remind me to never go see your father. That's not a wrist pin at all. No even close.

Have you or your father ever seen a wrist pin? Doesnt sound like it.
1st - Wrist pins are 1 peace not 2. A 2 piece wrist pin will not last at all due to the stress exerted on it.
2nd - Wrist pins are bigger and thicker to handle the stress they are under.
Maybe someone else should take their oil pan off and see if there's one in theirs also. I'd do it, but I have to wait till spring.

for one, I'm supplying a suggestion, doesn't necessarily mean It's correct, like many things in these forums, and 2 the wristpin itself is one piece yes, but it has bearings on either side of it, which in an aluminum piston, sit inside of a little steel sleeve, so they don't wear into the soft aluminum. It is my belief that the part in the picture is that sleeve. Also I know for a fact it's not normal for this to be in your oil pan, and yes I've actually removed oil pans from these motors, I see a lot of people popping in with the "collector magnet" theory, this cannot be. Its something to consider, There are loose parts in the engine, and it knocks apparently, it couldn't hurt to pull the pistons and check, right?
There's NO bearings in our pistons or rods other than the 2 pieces bearing at the big end of the rods. So forget about that wrist pin sleeve or whatever you call it. I've never seen that in any engine I've taken appart.

Thats the bottom part of the oil dipstick.. It breaks off & falls inside...

I don't think you need to worry, he's not a mechanic. The funny thing is, after hearing 2 mechanic's theories, his actually sounded sane.
