My serpentine belt is making a loud noise and can anyone tell me what might be wrong.

There have been other postings that may be worth searching on this subject, but I'll try to keep it brief.
Noise is usually caused by a worn belt, a weak tensioner, misaligned pulleys, or contamination of the pulleys or belt surface. One of the recent posts mentioned a TSB for this that involved cleaning the pulleys. It wasn't long ago, so it should be an easy find to get the details.
Mine's noisy every day if it's been damp out while the car was sitting. Once it's run for about 10 minutes or so, it seems to get quieter. My belt looks fine, tension seems fine, and the pulleys also appear to be straight, so I'm considering this a fairly "normal" condition for the design. I may try the cleaning mentioned on the TSB in the spring to see if it makes a difference though.
An accessory that's drawing an unusual load can also cause noise (as it causes the belt to slip). If it's suddenly gotten very noisy, and it doesn't change once the car is warmed up, you may want to remove the belt and turn each accessory by hand. The idler pulleys should turn freely with little to no resistance, and the other parts shouldn't require any unusual amount of effort to spin by hand (except the crank of course). If you're not mechanically inclined to do this, you should get it looked at. If something seizes, it can break the belt, and you're going nowhere if you have a 2.2. The water pump is driven by the belt, and the car will overheat rapidly if it's not turning. Don't try to drive it like that if something happens.
Hope this helps.
John

^^^... pretty brief

spend 13ish bucks and buy a new belt if that doesnt fix it then you have a more seriously problem like somehting he was talking about

replacing the belt is no biggy
there is a lever (tensioner) that acts like an arm to keep the belt tight.
throw a wrench (15mm i think) on the end to grab a hold and lift to relieve the pressure on the belt
remove. replace. backtrack

make sure that when you replace it you put it through in the same pattern as you took it off or you will have some accessories spinning in the wrong way... that would be bad news.

How hard is it to change the tensioner.

i had just gone threw this. was squilling so bad it pissed me off so i did some checks my tensioner was a little loose yet quited it down a little bit. then i took the belt off and ran for a sec since its just for accessories and it didnt make a noise. put a new belt on and soo quit u can hear the intake lol. but seriously my belt looked fine no wear no cracks, no dry rot looked as good as the new one yet it sqealled like a pig. just a defect in the mateial. jm2c

just thought I would throw up an update.... the silicon spray only worked for so long haha..... it starting to get really bad when idling.... so i decided to go pick up a new belt (Poly-V Goodyear Gatorback) put her in and just as bluedriftcavy mentions above you cannot hear a thing.... however my old belt was original with 85,000 km's on it.. it had some pretty good wear/cracks on it
