The car is a 01 Sunfire GT so the 2.4L engine auto tranny.... I was just on my way home from school and half way home the throttle got stuck at 60 km/h.... the pedal itself will not pull back it appears to be stuck.... if I throw it into Neutral the engine just starts to rev really high around 5000-5500 rpm.... any ideas on how to get it unstuck??
Just thought I would add that there is nothing interfering the operation of hte gas pedal ie... floor mat
I let the car sit outside for about 20 mins and now it starts up perfectly fine and the gas pedal feels 100% normal..... this is the second time this has happened (first time it was only stuck for maybe 30 seconds and that was 2 months ago)
I recommend the installation of a Parachute......just to be on the safe side

haha no doubt.... my brakes were way over heated and smelt pretty toast once I got her home.... its amazing that they could get so hot when its -30 out... haha only part of the car that was relatively warm.... I'm going to take a look tomorrow at the throttle body... its odd after the car sits in cold weather the pedal seems to have almost like a iced up feel to it.... like its not as smooth as normal.... I am a bit of a noob when it comes to the 2.4L engine since I have not had to do anything with it *knocks on wood* so where abouts is the throttle body located?
well it's back at er again.... both on my way to and from school it locked up again. however it only locked for around 30 seconds each time........ however this time it happened when I was stopped at a light.... the RPM kicked up to 2000 out of nowhere.... when it gets stuck it is always stuck at wanting to go 60 km/h.....i can definitely confirm that whatever is causing it... is causing the gas pedal not to retract into it's normal position.... is it possible that something is mechanically wrong with my gas pedal???? I'm going to take a look tomorrow at the throttle body again.... if I cannot find anything wrong she'll be heading to either the stealership or mechanic of some sort

Frayed inner cable?
Alont
I would disconnect the cruise control throttle cable to make sure it's not something going weird in there. If it happened while you were at a stop, I can't think of what else could cause this. The IAC motor opening wouldn't affect the movement of your throttle position, so it doesn't leave too much else.
Maybe it's posessed....
John
so I just took a good look at the throttle body and the linkage between the cable and the gas pedal... everything looks good.... the cables are not frayed in any way and are clean.... any ideas as to what I could use to lube the cable???? I backed off the cruise control cable just to make sure thats not causing any problems...... also I'm still getting a weird feeling when I first hit the gas pedal... it feels like it's stuck on something and takes more force then usual to get it passed the initial point of acceleration...

I lubed up the cable at every point I could access it... also lubed up the connection to the gas pedal..... the gas pedal feels normal now.... I'll still be doing a full cleaning this weekend
this seems to have cured the sticky pedal issue... however now my car is idling high... when sitting at a light (in drive) its reving between 1000-1500... normal is 500-750... when thrown into park or neutral the revs go up to 2500....
Could be a bad IAC, which is Idle Air Control, its not to expensive maybe runs you about ten bucks and its located at the throttle body. Its a motor that opens and closes to allow you to idle, but along with this is could be many other things. it just seemed sensible that since you were having an idling problem and you had messed with the TB that it would be a part to go out.
interesting.... will add to list of things to check/change.... I'm getting to the point where I might end up changing out the throttle body / cable
Just to let you know... a new IAC is pretty expensive...... you might want to make sure it's the problem before you replace it.... last time I replaced mine it cost somewhere around $80
A bit of an update....
Fixed the idleing problem....
Since it was very unseasonably warm today +6... I decided to pull of the reasonator and take a good look at the throttle body... the reasonator had a hell of a lot of water sitting in it and gunk..... the throttle body looked really disgusting actually.... so I cleaned the throttle body up really good cleaned all linkage.... cleaned out the reasonator and dryed it out... put everything back together and it feels nice now.... throttle feels a lot better.... I figure that having that much water in the resonator + cold temperatures lead to ice forming and that caused the throttle to be sticking....

hey man i do apologize after doing a little research i realized i had it backwards with the IAT, i was thinking IAC with an IAT price. The IAC would of indeed cost you a little more than 80 bucks, the IAT would of been around 12. Thanks weebel for pointing that out, once again Mcmanus sorry to give you the incorrect info.
so is it normal that the resonator would have a lot of water sitting in it?

YOu mean the black box that connects to the throttle body? No it is not.
