Wednesday, January 30, 2008 8:51 PM
I have the #1 cylinder of the block keep breaking the spark plug as like the electrode is completely gone when I look at it... is it the plug wires... is it something internal... the distributer... it keeps making a clicking noise, because the plug boot keeps poping on and off... any help would ...help??? thx...

Is the outside of the plug getting physically damaged? Maybe when the plug is getting smashed at the bottom, it's allowing compression pressure to go up through the plug and pressurize the boot, popping it off.
I would suspect that there's physically something in there breaking it off - and the collection is probably growing with each plug change! Try removing the plug, rotate the engine so that number 1 is at TDC, and try looking in through the hole with a flashlight to see what the top of the piston looks like. If there's pieces of stuff sitting in there, you can bet that there's probably damage to the piston, head, and valves too. I'd probably look for a "good" used motor. It would be interesting to pull yours apart to see what's happened.
If you DON'T see anything, I have no idea what's happening - unless you've put a plug in there that's supposed to be for an Ecotec. I think that they'll fit the hole, but they would extend WAY too far in. I would expect the piston to be damaged as well if this was the case. I would still expect to find some bits and pieces though. I wonder how much made its way down to the converter?...
Sorry to say - but I don't think there will be a happy ending to this story...

looks like the motor just throw the #1 spark plug completely out of the engine, now it looks like the threading is the problem on the head side of the spark plug issue... either way I'm taking it in to a family mechanic tomorrow to see if i just need a new head or what... n e one have a price guess as to how much a new head and labor would cost?

it sounds to me like the thread on the cylinder's spark plug warped and caused the spark plug to pop out of place because it was not properly installed.
(I think...)

either way it all adds up to a bunch of $$$$$$$$... hopefully I can get a good deal on a new head and the work...

so can you not install the spark plug back on?

yeah basically the treading holding the plug in place is stripped or cracked or one or another many things... I hope to get my car towed to my mechanic today if not hopefully before the end of the week...

they just need to drill a new thread.
your local auto parts should sell those new thread kits
Example:

• Sav-A-Thread is the easiest way to permanently repair stripped 14mm spark plug holes.
• Uses to
• Three different insert lengths come with the kit to accomodate all spark plug reaches
• Positive mechanical locking feature means the insert will never come out!
• The piloted reamer tap means no drilling is necessary and perfect alignment of the tapped
• Includes: 14mm tap, insertion tool and (3) inserts.

if a new thread can not be rebuilt, you will need a new cylinder head block.
I have my fingers crossed for ya!
you're looking at 1 to 2 hour labor

If I remember correctly from last year, the "book" calls for 10 hours labor for R&R of a head on the 2200, so that's likely what the charges will be based on if it's necessary.
It may be worth asking what the labor is to R&R the complete engine assembly! If they pull the head on yours and find more collateral damage, then there's going to be wasted time you're likely not going to recover. Used 2200s around here seem to start around $400. I'm sure a used head assembly would be less, but if you're not doing it yourself, it may be worth asking about the other option before they tear into it. Hopefully they can get an idea of what's happened when they see it, without any major disassembly.
Hopefully that's only a "worst case scenario". If a thread insert can do the job, and nothing else is damaged - that would be great! I don't seem to have luck like that though...

Dont do sav-a-thread. Helicoil it. Should be simple but on a spark plug hole its safer to pull the head first. This means new head gasket, Head bolts, and other assorted nuances......

This also considering there is no damage beyond the simply fixed stripped threads.

From the picture of the "Sav-A-Thread" package, it appears to say Helicoil at the bottom - is that not what the kit is? It just appears to have a tap, an insertion tool, and some different lengths of helicoils in there. I agree that the head really SHOULD be pulled for inspection and to prevent all the debris from going inside the cylinder. Based on the amount of labor to do that though - would bring me back to my last post.
Last year it cost me $600 (10 hours at $60 per hour) to R&R the head on mine, plus about $300 for machining (replaced one valve, all valve guides, and re-ground remaining valves and seats), and around $200 for gaskets and bolts. I provided the fluids, myself, but it was still around $1200 with taxes. I just had a burnt exhaust valve, and no damage to any other parts. This was at a FRIEND's shop - others had quoted hundreds more for the same job. I was just too busy at work to take the time to do it myself, and I needed it working to GET to work, so I didn't have much choice. I've seen the same guy replace an entire engine in a few hours though, so that's why I thought it would be good to also consider that avenue. Hopefully that won't be necessary...

I was charged 200+ dollars at the dealer to rethread the spark plug's hole back when I had a 1999 2200 and they didn't have to remove the cylinder's head; even tho they did tell me that if the trick did not work they were goinnna have to. who ever worked on it did a damn good job! because the spark plug kept popping out when I started the engine. I spent over an hour working on it trying to make it fit and it did go in kind of 1/2 in but then BOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! out it went!

I knew what you were talking about because I kind of did the same thing hehe
9 years ago, wow time goes fast..

they rethreaded it and sometime today I'll have to try and get a ride over there (about 4 miles away) and the guy said it was something like $130 for the rethread and labor total... I guess I got lucky... or did I??? ~
