All of a sudden the car has been stalling out, starts fine in the cold but if I give it a good amount of gas(in park) and then let off,the rpm's drop rapidly and the car stalls out. While driving ,car runs fine until I come to a stop then the same scenario happens. So what do you guys think?IAC,fuel filter, plugs, water in gas? Background on car:Has 131,000(2.4),oil needs changed badly, full tune up was done summer of '07.

well, A.)change the oil, lol B.) could possibly be a vacuum leak, does it rev up on its own? or does it just die? C.)could also be fuel filter, wouldnt be a bad idea to change at 131 k anyways.
I'm sure i have a small vac. leak from the HO mani,I put the spacer on first before the gasket, lol but I have had small(100-200)rpm spikes while driving at 40mph for awhile. So that's not it,and the filter was changed last summer so yeah car prob. needs another tune-up and maybe some dry gas to boot.

Well, today car ran ok,I listened to the pump kick on for about 2 secs. and it started fine.IAC was good but when I got home and put the car in park,I revved it to 3k and let off the gas.The car caught itself at about 500rpms and almost stalled.I'll just run some dry gas, injector cleaner, and change the fuel filter and see if that helps

I have a 5-speed and my car does that sometimes to.... If I blip the throttle in the parking lot, or come to a stop... sometimes the car just doesn't want to catch the idle.... and it sputters for a few secs...... it does it when it's cold most often... but it does it warmed up a sometimes too... and has only stalled on me once (when cold)....
From what I've read on this site..... it's a common problem and pretty normal for 2.4's to do that. As long as it isn't chronic.... I wouldn;t worry about it too much.... mine has done it for years without really any problems..... the same goes for some other people I know.
I've replaced everything that should effect it except for the computer and it still does it.... I think it might just be something in the computer feaking out a little once I started modding the car or something... who knows.. it doesn't hurt driveability really at all so I'm not concerned about it.... I've heard that re-tunes and MSD conversions help a bit..... hopefully I'll find out when I get around to doing those....
So how bad is it... and how often does it do it?
It just started two days ago and sometimes gets to the point where I have to use my left foot to brake and right foot to keep the rpm's up so it won't stall. The same thing happened on my old '93 Berreta(2.8) and it was the IAC but those are completely different than the cavs.I'll try re-setting the computer again and see what happens

Theres a TSB out on auto equipped cars where the TCC won't disengage upon deceleration, that might be your problem too. would warrant replacement of the TCC solenoid I believe.
TSB?You have a good point though about the TCC solenoid,I had people respond to me in the trans. forum as I am STILL having trans issues and they said the same thing,I even have a printout on how to disable the TCC.
Update:Today I went and got the oil changed and picked up some Seafoam from Autozone, well I had them scan the car and the scanner wouldn't even read AT ALL.I have a cel from the EGR being deleted and the ETS off light is on now.Guy says that either my port is bad or the computer is on it's way out.Any ideas?

Ahhh TSB=Technical Service Bullentin,do you know where I can get ,more info?I did get a list from Midas when they changed my oil,7 recalls from '00 thru '04 but none for the TCC or trans. issues

I did some looking for that TSB detailing the TCC problems, but could not find it. The TCC solenoid should not be extremely expensive, and I don't want to advocate replacing parts in the dark, but you might try replacing it yourself (requires pan removal) and see if that cures the issue. Again, I'm not condoning part replacement on a hunch, but it certainly can't hurt, and would be a good opportunity to put in synthetic fluid.
Yeah car runs worse now,it wont stay running unless I am giving it gas,it stalls out now all the time if I come to a stop or am sitting idle unless giving it gas.I have to keep the rpms up above 500 to keep it running.
I talked to Skunk and he said because I have the "chocolate milkshake" oil that I have a blown headgasket and that could be the main reason it is running like this.
