I've noticed the last week, on a cold start I hear a knocking noise maybe from the tranny or back of the engine. But it goes away after about 5 min warming up.
I changed the oil recently 5w30 synthetic. Also added alittle bit of trans fluid cause my trans cooler line has a tiny tiny leak.
Its been like -50 the last few nights also

You would probably make some knocking noises too if you were left out in -50 weather and suddenly asked to run!
Kidding aside - I wouldn't worry too much - my 2200 has sounded rather like a diesel whenever started in the winter for a few years now (and it's an '02). Like yours, it gets quieter after a few minutes. If you're already running a good synthetic, there's not much else to do except use the block heater if you can.
Some oil filters I've used have allowed the oil to drain back after shutting it off, making it unusually noisy for a few seconds at startup. This is caused by a bad anti-drainback valve. That noise is typically very short-lived though - so probably not what you're hearing. I've had good luck with Fram's Extended Guard filters in the winter - they've got a silicone valve which may work better in the cold. I had trouble with a Purolator the last time - although I feel that any Purolator is probably better than any of the cheaper Fram units. I only had a problem with one.
I would just warm it up until the noise goes away before driving too hard. You could probably just take it extra easy for a few minutes to warm it up faster - but obviously you don't want to be too nasty to it at that temperature even if it ISN'T making weird noises. When the warmer weather returns, it will probably be back to "normal" again. I would strongly suspect the engine to be making the noise - not the tranny.
I see you're located in Winterpeg - where my "old" car was originally sold almost 43 years ago. You can keep those temperatures to yourself! I'm down here in Southern Ontario where it's a balmy -10. I was there last July for a week - I'm glad it was warmer then! I love it in the summer out in the prairies - the air seems so nice compared to here. When I got home, I felt like I could hardly breathe!

hey thanks john

. I always use frams synthetic filter. The noise only happens when it sits over night. Well if it gets any worst i'll have it checked out I guess. I usually let it warm up like 10-15 mins , needs it cause its pretty cold right now
oh does anyone know how much it is to replace the trans cooler lines? or what part number they are? well thanks everyone again!!

actually, its been well proven that no fram has an anti-drainback valve that works, they're ALL plastic. they all have less filtering material than a purolator. i was using the more expensive fram filter till one day they were out of stock on all of the filters for my car except the cheaper purolator, so i got it, had no noise, and the next time i changed my oil, it came out MUCH cleaner. i've been running the pureONE since, as its got just about as much filtering media as a mobil1 filter at about half the cost. fram used to be a good filter, but in recent years, the quality has REALLY been on a decline...

I'd have to try that filter then, I hope we have that brand around here
probably do a oil change later this month, canadiantire has Q synthetic for only 25 bucks right now so i'll probably grab a few
