I drove off and did not put my gas cap on and lost it. I drove about 15 miles to home, when I restarted my car, the check engine light came on. After another 25 miles I bought another cap, put it on and now have drove 20 miles and light is still on. Did the light come on from the lack of cap? How long until it goes out?
Yes the light came on because of the cap missing. The light will go off after one driving cycle (which is pretty lengthly). Involves highway speeds, rapid accelerations, decelerations, and some cruising time.
You could just got to autozone and get the code cleared.

How do you clear the code?
Thats funny, mine was missing when i bought it, light was on, went and bought another gas cap, put it right on, started it up and the light went out automatically. Mines a 98 BTW
I was told by autozone that they are not allowed to clear codes. I stopped in on a thursday and had no problem clearing my codes, but my CEL came on the next day and the told me that I couldnt erase the codes. WTF!!!!!!! Thats just one of the reasons i hate autozone.
