1996 sunfire gt help with high Nox etest fail
Saturday, January 12, 2008 9:36 AM
I did a search on here and google but cant get concrete evidence of if i have an egr valve or not, everthing i find blames high No ppm on a faulty egr system.
Now all fine and well but if i have no egr what do i do then? The car has the 2.4l engine w/185000 kms and there was a new cat intalled 40000 kms ago and etested and passed(when i bought the car), the car runs great w/ no issues other than the etest fail!
Any good tricks i can use to get the car to run cooler for the retest?

I live in Ontario Canada and the temp was around 0 degrees C today when it failed( if that matters)

Please any help welcomed TIA

Ok i did more searching and found i should have an egr valve, im new to cars past 1990 so if someone can tell me were its located i would appreciate it. 2.4L engine
Ive looked under the hood but i cant seem to see anything that resembles what i know as an egr valve, lol the last one i saw was on my 1990 beretta and i dont see anything like that under the hood on the sunfire.

I'm usually of very little help but I'll try. When I had an Oldsmobile Ciera with the 3.3L engine it too constantly failed emissions on high nox. I replaced the catalytic, it didn't help. Then I found out I was losing coolant inside the engine. The end result was a leaking intake manifold which is quite common on these 3.8-based engines. Of course I scrapped the car because it was all rusty and falling apart, but I'm convinced that was why it wasn't passing emissions. The huge amount of smoke out of the tailpipe at cold start up also pretty much suggested the problem as being an internal coolant leak. So you should start there. Check the cooling system first. If everything there checks ok you can try checking the exhaust system and the EGR . You can go to the junkyard and see if you can find a used one there. I doubt your catalytic is the issue, especially since it's fairly new. But if it is aftermarket you never know, highly doubtful but still possible. I know this is isn't much help but hopefully you should find the problem. Also as I'm also in Ontario never leave an emission test to the last minute. Always do it at least a few weeks before you need to renew your plate just in case there are problems. IIRC the Ontario government has a limit of $450 to fix a problem related to emissions if you get your car serviced through a certified facility, or at least your car will get a conditional pass or whatever.

You may also want to check out this link for more useful information, it is not about the J platform but it may be useful to you:

As for the location of your EGR, check out a service manual for your vehicle.

Thanx john, I had taken the egr off and cleaned it out, cleaned the throttle body, did an oil change, ran a tank of fuel system cleaner and took it back today for a retest, again it failed , pretty much same numbers.
As for the coolent leak,im not convinced because it runs like a top and ive never seen any excessive smoke(steam) or whatever from the tailpipe at any time.
I will try replacing the cat anyways due to the fact that the guy who sold me the car put in on to pass the smog test when i bought the car and looking back at the reciept it was 99 dollars, kinda cheap. Crossing my fingers.

Well i opted for the 200 dollar diagnostic test so it would go towards my 450 dollar repair limit......it was the cat ,it brought my Nox down to 124 from 948,(limit 505).
It also brought the others down a fair amount....Just thought id post the solution and fix since it was pissin me off when i searched and found mostly abandoned threads without any real fix to the o.p particular problem.
Thanx to those who offered help!, <------MIKE------>
