Cylinder #1-2.4LD9
Thursday, January 10, 2008 4:32 PM
Since I have had problems with the cav(see other thread at bottom of page)I took out the plugs and
#2-3 showed normal use,#1 was covered in oil, badly,so I replaced it and car is still stalling out on
occasion. The Chiltons manual says that is a sign of worn piston rings and/or bad valve seals.Any
other ideas?I have not noticed any black, blue,or white smoke coming from the exhaust

Well I would suggest a compression check, and a leak down test. I would lean towards a leaky valve seal.

Agree with John and also if plug on cyl #1 isnīt geting spark it would get oily or wet so I would check its boot or whatever is called that acts as sparkplug cable.

yeah the boot is fine,I changed the plug and it drives a "little" better but I still have a vacuum leak somewhere.Upon start-up it will occasionally jump up to 2k rpm's and rev up and down from 2k to 2200 rpms then drop down.I agree john on the comp. test, your the second to suggest that.

*Edit* Today the car wouldn't start unless I floored the pedal, when it did start I had to keep the rpm's up or it would stall.

I am on my third IDI cover (the piece under where it says 2.4l twin cam if you have the black one throw it away and get the white one) symptoms where the first time two cylinders went dead and the second time at idle the engine had a kind of hiccup, I think that piece fried after putting the pedal to the metal too much. You may exchange #1 boot with say #4 and run for a while see if problem goes to #4 cyl. Have you cleaned the throttle body?I would also check MAP sensor vacuum line, IAT sensor and IAC clean all of them, reset the computer and see what happens.

Sounds normal to me.

To my knowledge the car shouldn't jump up to 2k on startup, mine never has even when it was stock. It
always would jump to 1k on a cold day startup then idle down to 700-750.In the summer it would go right to 700-750 upon startup.

Luis, the part name you are referring to is called the coil module and yes I have the white one.I think I may have
fuel issues as well.I need to start somewhere and find the problem, thanks

By chance, does anyone know if the 2.3 IAC can be reset like the 2.4?I have the HO manifold with the 56mm T.B and 2.3 IAC .

it peaks @ 1500- 2k on start up and drops to 1000 till the engine warms up (its about 26-35 f here right now) on a hot day (40-80 f) it revs to 1000 and drops to about 800 or so

what is a leak down test?

as far as biggs what it sounds like is you need to put the carb back on your other car and switch back to a tb. j/k

what is going on with cyl 4 is it in good shape?

from the info provided it sounds like the fuel injector on cyl 1 is plugged /not firing the map sensor is not relaying info back to the pcm the tps is over compensating ond causing the engine to rev up

things i would try are gaping the spark plug less to see if you can get any combustion in cyl 1 at all

question on how to pull a vacuum test
if i pull off the air intake tube and put my hand over it the engine stalls is that normal
and the correct way to test for a vacuum leak?

I've heard of a leak down test, not sure what it means or what is involved but agreed on the possible injector problem, got the carb joke, lol,I'll gap the #1 plug smaller and see if that helps

ive been pulling the motor (289) out of a 50's chevy 1.5 ton all week (2hr a day) and in the process some one threw a tb in the discard pile lol

any ways the spark plug thing worked for a wile on my plymouth breeze after i had a steel plug installed because the previous owner installed the wrong spark plug (they used a quarter inch shorter spark plug and the compression of the engine blew the plug through the hood)
