i had a knocking sound
did a compression test
passed it just fine
took everything apart
saw that the timing was off one notch
saw dings on the pistons
looked at valves
valves are straight
ok. youre cought up...
i was just wondering what could happen if i dont buff out the dings on my piston?
i seem to remember something about "hot spots" but can anyone inform me a little more?
and should i be able to see if my valves are bent without some special tool? because they look good just eyeballing it...
thanks for all the help with my project

Are there any dings on the cylinder wall, how about on the head or valves? If the only damage is to the piston then i would put money on that your valves and piston where hitting each other.
Valves have to seat PERFECTLY or else they'll end up burning. So i wouldn't go my eyeballing them. Take the valves out and roll them on the edge of a flat table or something, but make sure its flat. Im sure there are better whys to check for bent valves, but this is the only thing coming to mind right now.
I personally would put new pistons in and probably new valves(just to be safe)
ohhh good thinkin ill roll them when i get home and let you know.
ya the only dings are on the top of the piston right where the valves would have opened
so if the valves are super straight then i should be in good shape?

If the valves arent bent and arent damaged from hitting the piston, you should be fine. For the piston, i cant think of any problems that it might cause. I personally would feel better with new pistons, but im gonna leave that call up to you.
