wheel bearing, but not
Saturday, December 29, 2007 4:50 AM
Im having a weird issue with my 98 cavalier. So far I have replaced both front wheel bearings, and have new front tires. I get a weird vibration like a wheel bearing from the drivers side. When I turn right, it goes away. Could CV axles cause this? What else could cause it?

Pass. front was replaced a year ago (timken) and drivers front was replaced yesterday (cheapest advance brand) Seals on the CV joints arent ripped or leaking.

CV axles could possibly cause this if they are going bad. They don't tend to go bad though unless the boot gets damaged and leaks out all the grease, and you say thats not occurred. A bad wheel bearing would usually also make sort of a grinding noise when its going bad. Kinda thinking its MAY be the axle though, in a right turn the drivers side suspension would get loaded, more stress on whatever it is thats vibrating. Does the car make a clicking noise in turns? Thats a dead giveaway of an outer CV joint in process of failure. If its not clicking, it could possibly be the inner joint. But before you spend huge hunks of money on axles and more wheel bearings, get the front tires re-balanced, and see if that cures it. They are new, but may have been balanced incorrectly, or lost a weight.

It does it from 15-45mph, and it sounds like im running on snow tires during those speeds, but past that you either cant tell or its gone away. The passenger tire was replaced just before i bought the car (guy ran over a nail) so when i got it i got a new drivers side put on so they would match. Ill have the front passenger balanced tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks!

I went and got it balanced today, guess it had no weights on it and the wheel is bent. It still does it, but not as bad as before. Glad i just got steelies

Good deal, glad its not an expensive fix. And good thing steelies for this car are everywhere and can be had for almost nothing. As far as I know (maybe wrong) but am thinking any J-body wheel will fit from any year, I know for a fact 95 up will.
