Finishing up motor Swap.

I just finished swapping a new(to me) 2.4L in my 99 Z24 tonight. After a few battles we got it in and everything wired up.
I have a few problems that arose when we attempted to fire it up. One big one is that the start stopped engaging right away. I'm not sure if there is any reason for this other than the starter is screwed. It was on the old motor and it was directly in front of the hole that was blown in the block, so maybe that's why.

The other problems seem to be of an electrical nature. As soon as the battery is hooked up it sounds like the fuel pump is running, and it doesn't stop. I've tried pulling the relay and the fuse but it still keeps going. I'm not 100% sure on it, but I don't think that there are any wire under the hood that go to the fuel pump, maybe I'm wrong? Also the instrument cluster doesn't light up when you turn the key on. Absolutely nothing happens. The radio works, headlights, wipers, all that. Except when I turn the headlights on the radio turns off. I've checked fuses, I couldn't find anything wrong with them, unless I overlooked something.

I don't know, this is the weirdest problem I've come across in a while. Does anyone have any ideas why this stuff is happening?

what year vehicle did the motor come out of?
first of all you did swap in a pree 2000 2.4l dohc(ld9) motor right?
and it is a 2.4 and not a 2.2 right?

You didnt cut any wires and or splice connectors in the process did you?

what do you mean by battles?

a "modle" correct engine "shouldn't" have "much" of any problems going in

it sounds like you swaped in the wrong motor if none of the dash light cycle when you turn the key on.

It's a 2.4L that came out of a 98 Cavalier. It was supposed to be a 99 but they screwed up and gave me the wrong engine. Oh well, I tapped out a bolt to make the 99 knock sensor fit in the 98 block, and got everything in there, I used the intake manifold that came out of the car initially, and the original fuel injectors. There was no splicing done or anything like that, Just plugged everything back in.

The dash didn't light up before we took the old engine out, I just thought that maybe something that happened with the engine when the rod went through the block, but after we got everything in it was still the same. Everything seems to work fine, headlights, taillights, signals, interior light, sunroof, radio. However the fan controls don't work, the A/C light is on constantly whenever the battery is plugged in, and the fuel pump runs constantly (with the key sitting on the seat), and nothing on the dash at all, even when the key is on.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I know that the battery got ran dead and I think it froze, there's a big bulge in the side of it, so we got another battery for the time being. I was looking in my shop manual and noticed that the fan, a/c controls, instrument cluster and all that stuff is controlled off the PCM, or at least that's what it looks like to me. Is it possible when the battery froze it may have shorted something out in that module?

Otherwise I'm out of ideas, I have no idea if it runs or not because the starter isn't engaging anymore... so I guess I have to get a new one, or try to see why it's not working. The rod came through the block right behind the starter, so maybe that damaged it a bit, I'm not sure.

get rid of the battery first of all, before you blow it up

  1. get a new battery
  2. have the alternator checked for proper operation
  3. ensure all your grounds are GOOD grounds, including the battery tray
  4. have the starter checked for proper operation, and make sure the wiring for it is good and bolted down tightly
  5. last resort, try a new PCM

The battery was thrown out as soon as it was found out that it was crap.
In the process of checking the grounds.
And I'm pretty sure the starter is wired correctly, but it will be removed and reinstalled again when I get back home and get the chance.
As for the alternator, I can't see that having anything to do with the problem because the car has yet to run.

Either way, why would the fuel pump run as soon as any battery is connected to the car? It never shuts off...is this normal? I would think that it should only run when the key is on.

OK, I quite possibly have the worst luck in the world. This has been a non stop fight with this damn thing lol.

Ok, I got the starter fixed, so it's working properly now, well sort of. The gages and fuel pump were a result of me powering something that should have been grounded. Whoops, I forgot how the starter was wired up. Oh well that's all corrected now and the starter was reinstalled after being fixed then tried to start the car, and it ran for a bit and then quit. I'm not sure if it's a passlock issue or not because I haven't had the chance to try out the relearning or anything like that because the starter won't stop cranking even with the key off. Has anyone ever had a starter solenoid do this before? That's the only thing I can think of aside from ignition wires shorting out.
